The national language of the Netherlands is Dutch or Netherlandish (Nederlands) but in the North there is a regional language, West Frisian, which is more closely related to English, being one of the Ingvaeonic languages, along with East Frisian, North Frisian and Mecklenburgische.

Dutch being the main language, English as a 2nd, the Dutch people are extremely versatile, many will also speak German and French

The official language of the special municipality Bonaire is Papiamento.

Answer

Most Dutch people speak multiple languages. About 90% of the population speaks English, 71% German, 29% French and 5% Spanish. But there are more languages are spoken in the Netherlands. There are various dialects and large groups of immigrants who speak their own languages as well.

Answer

The Dutch speak Dutch, although there are many dialects, of which most sound more or less the same as 'regular' Dutch and have the same (overall) grammatical structures. Depending on the region these dialects sound 'German' (in the east) or 'Flemish' (in the south) to an outsider.

The 'real' Dutch language is thought of as originally being an Hollandic dialect (South and North Holland being the most west situated provinces of the Netherlands).

In the province of Friesland, in the northern part of the Netherlands, people speak (West) Frisian. This is also a Germanic language (as is Dutch itself), although it differs significantly from 'regular' Dutch. Most Dutch people can't fully understand this language without additional training

If that is not what you meant: high-school children are being taught German, English, French (and Greek/Latin (classical languages) when in grammar school) and Dutch (and Frisian in Friesland). In some schools, children can also choose from Spanish, Turkish, Arabic and I think even Chinese.

Depending on the level of education, these courses can range from 2 to 6 years.

Answer

What is the meaning of Netherlands?

Netherlands is the English translation of 'Nederland'. Nederland literally means 'low lying land' ('Neder' is an older word with the definition low and 'land' means land). The Netherlands are partially located below sea level and that is the reason why it is called The Netherlands.

In English and multiple other languages the country has been given the plural form, since you could say that The Nederlands exists of multiple low lying lands. This was also the case till 1815. Before that The Netherlands as a whole didn't exist.

In other languages you can also see this translation of 'low lying lands'. For example in French: 'les Pays-Bas', in German: 'die Niederlande' and in Italian: Paesi Bassi.

Why was new netherland called new netherland?

The official name of Netherland is "Koninkrijk der Nederlanden" ("Kingdom of the Netherlands"). Dutch people call it shortly "Nederland". "Nederland" consists of two words, "Neder" and "land". "Neder" is an old word for Low. The word "land" requires no further explanation.

"Netherlands" thus literally translates to "Low Lands", and that's exactly what it is, as the biggest part of it is below or just above sea level.

Rivers that flow into other rivers are sorted by the proximity of their points of confluence to the sea.

How does the Netherlands protect its low lying areas?

The Netherlands has a sea-climate. It also doesn't lie anywhere near a fault line, where two earth plates hit each other. Therefor, there have never been real tragedies concerning water.

There was a flood in 1421 which claimed some lives and one in 1953 that claimed 1835 human lives and some cattle.

The Dutch have embankments (these are basically elevated parts of dirt, rocks and other natural material) along most rivers. When the snow in the Alps (mainly, there's more) melts during spring, this water flows through those rivers. The embankments stop the rivers from flooding and doing damage.

In the south-west, there are mechanical dams that close when there is a heavy storm at sea, to prevent a repetition of the flood of 1953.

As I said, there are no real tragedies concerning water. If the Netherlands is ever hit by a hurricane, tsunami or whatnot, most would not survive. Over half of the country lies below sea level.
