Is Canton Ohio a safe town?

I currently work in Canton a few blocks outside the Downtown area in the old Mckinley High School building. I live south of town in a different county. Originally I am from Pittsburgh PA and have only been in Ohio for 2 years. Coming from an urban neighborhood in Pittsburgh, I think Canton is basically safe. I can see why Canton has a bad reputation because there is a lot of crime here for a city of its size. The crime rate index is through the roof because a large percentage of the population in Canton is poverty stricken and see no other option but to sell drugs. Where I work it is common to see open business being conducted on corners. It is also common to see hookers walking u and down the street. Actually I see more prostitution in Canton than I did in Pittsburgh. The thing that keeps Canton from being dangerous is that it is a small city and the criminal activity, although it is rampant, is not as intense or extreme as you would find in a bigger city. Most big cities even my own hometown of Pittsburgh which is not huge, has places that are all out war zones. Places where you cant drive safely in the middle of the afternoon. That is not the case in Canton. Most neighborhoods in the city of Canton have considerable criminal activity but none of them are so bad that you would be taking your life in your own hands just diving through them. So my take on Canton is that yes it is full of problems but no it is not what I or anybody who has ever lived in an urban neighborhood will consider dangerous.

Beyond the cime issues that are overblown, Canton is not a city most would want to live in. Its boing other than the Football Hall of Fame and a laughable so-called art scene in the tiny Downtown. There is only 1 mall. Apparently there used to be another 1 but its mostly desserted now. Jobs are impossible to find. The only thing people care about here is high school football, which as a college athletics recruiter thats how i landed here but for the most part jobs are non existent, entertainment is non existent and the culture scene is definitely non existent.
