What role does the placebo effect have in alternative medicine?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A placebo effect happens when you are in a study. Someone conducting the study will divide the people into two groups: one getting real treatment and one getting fake treatment. An example might be some people are really getting pills for their disorder while others are just getting sugar pills or something that wouldn't help or harm them. The catch is that people do not know that they are not getting real treatment. Because they think that they are getting treatment, they are feeling better. It is sort of like when your mom kisses your boo-boo. It is an example of mind over matter.

More input

Sometimes doctors will give placebos to patients when they think that the patient's symptoms are psychosomatic (meaning that it is all in their head). This is illegal but a doctor in an ER once did this to me anyway.

More input

A placebo is used as a control in clinical trials, to compare the effectiveness of a new drug or intervention with one known to have no direct medical effect. This is necessary because in some conditions expecting an improvement in symptoms may actually precipitate such an improvement, and this bias must be excluded from analysis of the intervention being tested.

Prescribing a placebo during clinical trials without the patient's consent is illegal

Example: Placebo analgesics (for example a cream containing no active ingredients) can reduce pain induced by cutaneous administration of capcasin (which induces pain via TRPV1 channels)

Placebo is equally there in all systems of medicine, including conventional. Here's an everyday example: when you take an aspirin or paracetamol or whatever for a headache, you might find yourself feeling a little better almost immediately. THAT is placebo; the pill will not have reached the target area that quickly, but a mental trick has occurred.
It refers to the effect of the mind, and feeling a result mainly because you think you will. Placebos are fake pills given to people to make them think they are taking actual pills; because the person thinks they are taking a pill, they may actually feel (or at least think they feel) the effects that they expect from the pill.
placebo affect is also known as the sugar pill affect. It means that you are given something that you think will work, and mentally you make it work, but in reality, what you were given had no effects

What Natural remedies are for flu?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The best treatment for the common flu is to start the moment you feel the flu coming on. For the first day, rest, take vitamin C, zinc** and an over the counter fever reducer like ibuprofen, aspirin (not for children 14 or under due to Reye's syndrome) or acetaminophen (use only as directed, can be liver toxic). Use zinc every four hours to a maximum of four (4) zinc tablets in one day. If the flu has not gotten remarkably better the next day, repeat the dosages and timing for all.

By the third day you should be up and around and in the recovery phase. At which time you take Vitamin C and zinc twice a day (morning and night) until the symptoms are gone. Once the flu is gone, stop taking the zinc.

To help maintain a healthy immune system, it is advisable to eat well, exercise regularly, get enough sunlight and in the flu season supplement your diet with extra vitamin C and echinacea. Follow the instructions for taking echinacea.

**Recent studies have shown that the zinc lozenges are more effective than taking oral zinc supplements for colds or flu, it is believed that it helps prevent the viruses from attaching as easily to the cells of the mucous tissue (this is how the viruses invade our bodies) since the lozenges coat the mucous tissue directly. Follow label directions.

Can you sleep only 3 or 4 hours per day and keep a good health?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This can lead to heart problems because your heart is getting no "rest." When you sleep, your heart beat slows down giving it some time to recuperate from the long day of work. No sleep will also lead to stress, which not only affects you physically but also affects your organs.

How do you go about caring or healing of a torn ligament without a Dr.'s care?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

when i did all i did was massage it and stretch it and it was ok

A:: That answer is incorrect. That only works if you've just sprained something. A torn ligament is better to just rest it and NOT stretch it anymore than you have to or you could cause more damage. But if you can stand it put some heat on it and massage it some. Try getting in a hot bath and rubbin it. It'll feel better, but you still shouldn't try using it. Everyone hates hearin this, but it'd be better if you went to a doctor about it. Ya might make it worse if you don't get help.. If your a runner like me, you'll want to get it fixed. So GO!!!

To avoid surgical means, do hope that your torn ligament still retain its blood supply (not destroyed during the impact of injury).

I have ligament injury in both wrists after a bad fall from a karate sparring, and in the midst of visiting a doctor specialised in sport medicine.

I advise you to start on Glucosamine Sulphate and Collagen supplement, which theorically are what make up the ligament, so it might help. Consume Vitamin C-rich foods too, for they allow synthesis of collagen.

Do very light exercises, it act both as a stress stimulus to strengthen your ligament and stimulate blood flow to promote healing, and use heat therapy (such as heating pad or the hot bath the guy above said). It improve the extensibility of the ligament, and stimulate blood flow via vasodilatation.

The best way -> Visit a sport doctor and request for prolotherapy, which involve injecting irritants in the area of injury to promote controlled, localised inflammation (much unlike chronic inflammation that damage tissues) which promote thickening and regrowth of ligament.

How you do numb your big toe?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If the nail's already black, it's too late; you need to take care of the problem soon after the accident, before the nail clots. The nail itself has no sensation, so it's not necessary to numb it. When the hot needle gets to a liquid collection of blood, you'll feel it for a split second, but then you'll feel overwhelming relief as the pressure eases.

What are the differences between bonesetters and chiropractors?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In the United States, a D.O. (doctor of osteopathic medicine) is equivalent to an M.D. with exactly the same rights and privileges - for example, a D.O. can prescribe drugs and perform surgery just like any M.D. The medical training of an American D.O. is identical to an M.D. and they are often found in the same residency programs or same practice. Legally a D.O. is considered a medial physician in all 50 states. The same cannot be said for a chiropractor.

Is alternative medicine better than allopathic medicines?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Acupuncture is generally regarded as safe and effective, but your success generally depends on the experience of the practitioner. A: While I do agree that alternative medicine could be valuable, I do, also, believe, just as in conventional medicine, the "success" depends on the knowledge of the person(s) who prescribes, prepares, and/or administers it. Alternative medicine has a broad spectrum: naturopathy, herbalism, chiropractic, traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, acupressure... just to name a few. So, how safe they are?

  • Herbs can and do interact not only with medicine the patient might be taking, but also, with other herbal products. They are not suitable for everyone, even if they have the same disease. Individuals have individual tolerances, metabolic rates, etc. Herbs could be contaminated due to careless preparation, insecticide, herbicide residue, soil contamination, etc.
  • Some herbal products are safe only for external usage, they can be seriously harmful if taken internally.
  • Chiropractic strokes can happen after neck manipulation.
  • Infection is not impossible following acupuncture.
  • It's important not to believe something extracted from a plant is suddenly curing cancer. You have small problems, and you have major problems. Acupuncture has proved to be the best non-anaesthetic pain-reliever, but it does not in any way cure the root of the problem. Many drugs are based on compounds found in nature, so it is logical that some natural medicines will work. However almost no alternative medical titles, such as homeopathy, are protected titles. That means if you go to a doctor, he or she has 6-7 years in medical school behind him. An alternative title could just as well have a weekend seminar. Be a sceptic!
Just a few examples to highlight the possible dangers of alternative medicine. I do firmly believe that alternative medicine could be an integral part, a valuable part, of medicine, but, unfortunately. nothing is totally safe. However, by choosing reliable professionals and reputable products, those dangers could be lessened.

Answer: In this modern time alternative medicines have been scaling new dimensions of our life. Lots of health specialist and health care center embrace this form of natural treatment. These natural therapies have been considered to be safe and have negligible side effects. It also provides the extreme relief to the patients whose life is living in drugs and different artificial medicines. Lastly, alternative medicines also help develop healthy muscles and strong bones.

--- Some forms of alternative therapies may be beneficial in promoting good health. However, your expectations should be realistic and you it would be best to ensure you are eating a balanced diet, getting enough and getting proper exercise. Caution should be used with remedies that claim to cure several ailments. Do your research and make an informed decision.

Why is generic medicines are cheaper compare to brandnames drugs?

User Avatar

Asked by Nyamie

Generic medicines use drugs that have been around for many years that have had the patents on them revoked because of their age. This means companies who produce them do not have to pay any rights to the owners of the drugs, who can charge what they like to companies who wish to produce them. This is the case for newer medicines under patent.

What is the holistic concept?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In medicine a "holistic" concept or as I'd like to call it an "approach" is the theory of treating a patient's whole mind, body, and spirit (soul). So say you have a chronic pain patient you can offer them things like Talk Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), etc. for the mind. You could offer them medication for the pain for the body. And then finally you can offer them spiritual services that meet their particular beliefs and values.
