What does net mean in ham radio?

Net is short for network. It is a group of organized radio stations meeting on a set time/frequency to exchange information etc. For example, every night a 8:00 p.m. our club runs a net where individuals tune into a set radio frequency to allow for announcements, messages or emergency information to be exchanged. By meeting each night on a schedule, if there was a disaster or failure of communications, each member would know that at least once per day there would be an set time/place to meet to get or send information to each other.

Why are amateur radio signals bounced off of the moon?

Ham (amateur) radio has always been the place for the electronics/radio/hobby

person who wonders "Is this possible ?" to go try and find out.

Starting from the time when the government spectrum regulators first gave great

gobs of frequency bands to amateur radio ... because nobody knew how to use

them yet, and they were thought to be relatively worthless for communication.

Today, that region of the spectrum begins roughly at the upper frequency edge of

the AM broadcast band !

The evolution of radio equipment and the expansion of RF communication, from the

very beginning up until about World War II, was accomplished mainly by ham radio

people. Communication techniques that include 'short wave', voice, FM, 'teletype',

single sideband, TV, phase modulation, and data packet, were developed, built, and

first used by hams, before they were picked up by 'mainstream' industry.

During roughly the past 20 years, two of the main challenges that have been tackled

by amateur radio operators ... many using home-built electronics and antennas ... are:

-- communicating through artificial satellites carrying amateur radio repeaters

-- communicating by reflecting their signals from the moon.

Both methods share two of the same purposes:

1). Use the satellite or the moon to extend the range of communication between

me and somebody in a distant place, when we could not normally hear each other

over the usual ground or ionospheric signal paths.

2). Find out for myself whether I can do it !

How do you wire in a ham radio into a 2003 Jeep Liberty?

Power is best run directly from the battery. The power lines in the cab often do not carry sufficient, clean power. Just connect to the battery and route the wire through any available grommet or other opening in the firewall or drill and grommet a small hole in a safe location. As for antennas, it depends on what band radio you are running. for VHF/UHF, I drilled and mounted a small antenna on the roof im the middle near the tailgate. You can take the trim off around the healiner inside the tailgate and drop the headliner enough to allow you to drill and mount the antenna. I prefer the NMO mouting system. Other options for VHF/UHF would be a on the glass mount antenna that sticks to the side cargo windows. For HF, you'll need something bigger like maybe a trailer hitch mount or ball mount on the side.

How much wattage to drive a Palomar 350 amplifier?

This varies user to user, but for the best output, a low keying wattage with more forward swing is best. If you drive the amp with a keying wattage of 1 watt, and a forward swing of 20 watts, the amp will perform and the modulation will be loud and strong. Where if you key the amp with 20 watts and swing to 22 watts, the carrier will be extremely powerful but it will not produce that powerful sound like having lots of forward swing does.

Which elements can be administered by a general class VE?

General Class license holders that are VEs can give exams for those testing for their Technician license.

Amateur Extra Class license holders that are VEs can give exams to General and Amateur Extras.

How do you unlock a pro scanner 96 all frequencies?

There is no magic way to "unlock" a modern scanner, so the frequency ranges listed in the operating manual are all that the scanner is capable of receiving. If you want wider coverage you'll need to purchase a scanner that provides it.

Origin of the word ham in ham radio?

Amateur radio, often called ham radio, is both a hobby and a service in which participants, called "hams," use various types of radio communications equipment to communicate with other radio amateurs for public service, recreation and self-training. But we still don't know the origin of the word HAM.

How to make a home yagi antenna to receive FM signals?

To cut a wire or aluminium tubing length for a dipole antenna take your frequency in Megahertz that you want to tune the antenna to and divide that number by 468. This will be the full wave length of the frequency you will be tuning to. For general purpose listening cut the antenna to mid frequency of the FM band. Cut this wire (or tubing) into two equal pieces. This will be the driven element feed point. For a yagi antenna cut a reflector 10% larger that the first cut and place it 1/2 wavelength behind the driven element on the boom. For the director cut the wire length (or tubing) 10% smaller that the driven element and place it on the boom 1/2 wavelength in front of the driven element. This will give you a three element yagi antenna.

Why can you only hear dispatchers voice and not the formans on portable radio?

Most probably because you are using some sort of repeater-based radio system, and you are far from the repeater. Either that, or you are line-of-sight to the dispatcher, but the foreman is located somewhere that is blocked by obstructions.

Dispatcher radios are typically "base stations" that have a much higher output power than a portable radio you might carry on your belt. With more power and a more efficient antenna, it's possible for a dispatcher to reach radios in the field, but those radios may not be able to answer back to the dispatcher.

If there is a repeater system in use, then typically the radios transmit on one frequency and listen on another frequency separated by the "offset". In ham radio on the 2 meter band this is typically 600KHz....so my local repeater transmits on 147.16 and has a + offset, meaning that it listens on 147.76. My radio listens on 147.16, and when I press the transmit key it shifts up to 147.76. Every other radio that's listening hears the repeater on 147.16, but NOT me on 147.76. Unless of course they're close, and they change to the 147.76 frequency. Then they could hear me transmitting directly, instead of being relayed through the repeater.

At VHF and above, line-of-sight is very important. If there are mountains, buildings or other stuff in the way, the radio signal is blocked. This is why so many systems use repeaters; it can be on top of a mountain somewhere nearby, with a clear view of all the radio users in the valley below. VHF is somewhat less line-of-sight than UHF, but you still won't get much if you're behind a mountain. (Even a little one!)

Cell phones are very high frequency, but they get away with this by having lots of cell sites (repeaters) scattered all over the place, so there's almost always one within easy range. The cell sites negotiate among themselves to decide who handles your call, and when to hand it off to another site that has a better signal.

Is there possible to tune FM radio on PC without Internet connection?

Yes, do a search for an "FM Radio Card". It plugs into a card slot like a modem or network card and with included software allows you to tune in stations. An Antenna is required but No Internet connection.

How much is a HAM radio worth?

Amateur Radio (ham) sets are of varying quality and design. Some are quite simple and others are very elaborate, each doing basically the same thing which is transmitting a radio signal over the airwaves for non-commercial use. Ham radio operators require licensing by the FCC in the United States.

What is means by QSK in tele communication?

QSK is one of the "Q-signals" used in Morse code communication. It refers to "full break-in" operation; that is, where the sender's receiver can hear other signals in between the dots and dashes that are being sent. It allows another person to "break into" the communication.

Not all transmitter/receiver installations are capable of "full break-in" operation.

What is grundig worth?

Unfortunately Grundig no longer exists, it is now just a name put on cheap rubbish.

What is are Sarcosucus?

A sarcosucus is a 40 foot 100 million year old crocodile which is extinct and weighs about 16,000 pounds and has a bite pressure of 18,000 pounds around 12 tonnes.

What is an fcc license for a 2 way radio?

the blue cheese association

If you are purchasing a two way radio that operates using GMRS frequencies, and plan to use it withing the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that you register for a GMRS license.

Why do I need an FCC license?

In the United States, the FCC regulates the frequencies that are used by devices like two way radios. The FCC requires that anyone operating a device on the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) obtain a license prior to use.

How do I apply for a GMRS FCC license?

A GMRS license requires that you complete FCC form 159 and form 605. These forms can be found on the FCC forms page.

You can also apply for a GMRS license online at the FCC Universal License System (ULS) web site.

Is there a charge for a GMRS license?

Yes. The FCC currently charges a $75.00 fee for GMRS licenses. Some applications are exempt from this fee.

Do I have to get a license before I can buy a two way radio?

No. We do not require a license before we will ship a two way radio. We are in no way affiliated with the FCC, or the GMRS licensing process.

Do you report to the FCC that I purchased a GMRS radio?

No. We are in no way affiliated with the FCC, or the GMRS licensing process. As is stated in our privacy policy, we will never provide your information to any third party (outside of the immediate billing processes) unless we are ever required to do so by law or to be in compliance with a court order.

Do I have to get a license if I live outside of the United States?

You only need a FCC GMRS license if you are using the GMRS frequencies within the United States.

What do you do when ATC requests you to Squawk Mode Charlie or Mode C?

Mode A transponder response can be paired with the pressure altitude of the aircraft from a separate pressure encoder. This is known as Mode C, or Mode Charlie. An ATC request to squawk Mode Charlie / Mode C means that they want to see the pressure altitude data of the aircraft in the transponder's response, usually to assist with separation.

Ham radio shorthand what does all the numbers mean?

License codes ( not to be confused with Morse), such things as call letter- which are all in alphanumeric form- like commercial stations- WBAI-99.5 FM ( actually that"s a non-com or Underground station but illustrates the point. Hams used to make up trick verbal codes such as (I"m pulling this out of a hat- say it is Radio 0844 PSG- well this might be talked out as O 8 4 4 Pea Soup George. This was part of the fun, as while amateurs had to use the frequencies assigned (like phone numbers)- there was some latitude for things like Pea Soup George. ( promininent actor Andy Devine was a one-time Amateur operator and he used the call signs- number first ( I don"t know the number) but Red Eyed Rooster- for the cipher RER. Incidentally musical jingles- anything like ( Ringtones) are and were de-factoi forbidden- as all music transmission on Ham wavelengths is ILLegal. -and this is a stock question on FCC exams.

Is it safe to use DIY CB antenna if the SWR is under 1.5 and can you use longwire antenna for receiving CB radio?

A standing wave ratio of 1.5 is still a bit high. You should couple the antenna via some sort of antenna tuner and tune as close to 1:00 SWR. While t is possible to use a longwire antenna for CB reception purposes, the performance won't be too great. If, however, you are planning on transmitting, again, the longwire antenna should be coupled to the transmitter via some form of antenna tuner, to match impeadances, lower the SWR, and protect the final stage of the transceiver. A resonant long wire antenna only requires that the length of the wire is approximately resonant at the frequency of operation. For CB this means the wire must be a multiple of 11.1m (36ft 6.5 inches). Therefore, a three wave long wire would be 33.3 m (109' 9") and four-wave long wire would be 44.4m (146' 3") in length.

Do you need a license to buy a ham radio?

How do you start amateur radio?

start off with an internet radio station. use caster beta, download the software it tells you to download, (although keep in mind SAM BROADCASTER is expensive, hard to run, and is outdated) and you got yourself a radio station. forget about wave radio, you will need a licence and it takes several years education in engineering to be able to pull it off. but did i mention caster beta was free?
