Where was the great sphinx built?
One of the greatest "wonders" that still survives from an ancient civilization is the Great Sphinx at Giza, in Egypt. A sphinx is a mythical animal that has the head of a human and the body of a lion.
The sphinx became part of Egyptian religion and many sphinx were made, but the most famous and the oldest is the Great Sphinx. This sphinx was built in the 26th century B.C. The face had the features of the king at that time, King Khafre, so that people could worship him in this special form. It is carved from a natural bluff of rock that lies in the center of a large quarry. The body and the head are carved right from the rock, while the out-stretched paws are added in masonry. The figure was originally covered with painted plaster, and there are still some traces of this.
While we can see and admire the Great Sphinx, it is quite different now than it was originally because of all the damage it had suffered. Drifting sand has caused a great deal of erosion and created a kind of a ripple effect on the body. It has also been injured by humans. In 1380 a ruler of Egypt did great damage to the face. At one time the monument was used as a target for guns.
The Great Sphinx is 66 feet high, its length is 240 feet. The nose is 5 feet 7 inches and the mouth is 7 feet 7 inches in length. The face is about 13 feet and 8 inches wide.
How do we Know so much about ancient Egypt's science and technology?
I'm in fact doing a project on ancient Egypt right now and I believe the answer is that the ancient Egyptians wrote down EVERYTHING. They kept an enormous amount of records and must have wrote down their ideas and developments in science and technology as well as everything else. Their hieroglyphics were deciphered by a young French scholar, Jean Francoise Champollion, from the Rosetta stone in the 19th century.

What are the names for the jars of Egypt?
Canopic jars were used by the Ancient Egyptians during the mummification process to store and preserve the viscera of their owner for the afterlife. They were commonly either carved from [lime] stone or were made of pottery.[1] These jars were used by Ancient Egyptians from the time of the Old Kingdom up until the time of the Late Period or the Ptolemaic Period, by which time the viscera were simply wrapped and placed with the body.[2] All the viscera were not kept in a single canopic jar, but rather each organ was placed in a jar of its own. The name 'canopic' reflects the mistaken association by early Egyptologists with the Greek legend of Canopus. The canopic jars were placed inside a canopic chest and buried in tombs together with the sarcophagus of the dead. It was also done because it was believed the dead person would need their organs to help them through the after life.
Does Egyptian God Thoth have a wife?
Egyptian myths can be slightly confusing, so brace yourself...
In a well known myth to those who are familiar with basic Egyptian myths is the myth of the Ogdoad, these were the 8 children (4 sets of twins) born of Thoth and his wife Ma'at, daughter of Ra, who was the personification of truth and justice.
But, in some Nomes (Regions) of Egypt, another wife of Thoth was the goddess Seshat, who was his 'counter-part' as goddess of the written word.
I've tried to keep this a s simple as possible, so sorry if I ended up confusing you ...
What is the pyramid of cheops built from?
he pyramid is predominately made of limestone blocks weighing an average of 2.5 tons. This was quarried locally at the base of the pyramid. The waste material from this quarrying was mixed with Tafla (a type of clay) and used to make the ramps used in the construction of the pyramid. There is some evidence to suggest that some of the quarries were filled in with the material from the dismantled ramps when the pyramid was completed.
The linings for the passageways and the burial chambers were made from Granite brought from Aswan 400 miles upriver from Giza. The pyramid originally had a smooth casing of white stone from Tura on the east bank of the Nile.
What was the Egyptians culture and beliefs?
The Egyptians believed in many 'mythological' or 'supernatural' beings, or as we call them, Gods. There is a god for just about everything imaginable and for this, a book from the library is great. Egyptian gods were unique in that many were half animal, half human. They believed in an afterlife and that their soul had to be light when they died or they would have been eaten and not allowed to live a peaceful afterlife. The mummification of a Pharaoh's body was another thing the Egyptians kept in practice. Most of the major organs were removed from the body and put into jars before going into a different chamber. The brain was removed by a small hook that went up the nasal cavity and removed chunks piece by piece. Isn't that delicious?
