Why does the spleen enlarge in sickle cell?
Because the spleen is responsible for destruction of abnormal red blood cells; therefore since sickle cell causes abnormalities in red blood cells, the spleen works extra hard for extended periods of time to remove them.
The severity of anaemia can vary greatly from person to person. In its mildest form, the person will hardly notice that they are anaemic, they may just feel slightly more tired than usual. In its most severe form, if left untreated it can lead to death although this is very rare.
Usually people suffering from anaemia will be somewhere in the middle and experience symptoms such as tiredness and weakness, dizziness, headaches and shortness of breath. However, with a good diet and treatment (which will depend on the type of anaemia) these symptoms can usually be controlled.

Do vegans have lower rates of anemia?
Depends if the vegan eats a lot of nuts or takes a daily vitamin with iron in it. overall meat eaters probably consume more iron If the vegan doesn't take vitamins. There are plenty of natural foods with iron in them that can help vegans get plenty of iron.
Vitamin C, which is abundant in a vegan diet, helps with the absorption of iron.
Why could you have low hemoglobin levels?
Low hemoglobin is cause from a slow bleed somewhere . Or it could even be a bleed that is heavier .Alot of blod disorders could cause it .I would say slow bleed .
I'd like to confirm that low hgb is caused by anemia or hemorrhage (bleeding). You can get anemia if you lack iron or if you have one or more of the various diseases that cause your body to not make new red blood cells (e.g. aplastic anemia), destroy red blood cells (e.g. sickle cell anemia), or bleed a lot (e.g. hemophilia).
Hemorrhaging (bleeding) due to external or internal injury can cause you to become anemic from loss of red blood cells.

What groups get sickle cell disease?
A person can only inherit sickle-cell genes if some of their ancestors came from certain regions in Africa where the inhabitants carry sickle-cell genes.
A person with one sickle-cell gene has sickle-cell trait, a milder problem.
If both father and mother pass on sickle-cell genes, the child, with two genes, will have sickle-cell disease.
Lower RBC count which could be caused due to specific iron deficiency diseases. For example, Hemacromatosis would be considered a chronic iron def. disease
What are the symptoms of hemolytic anemia?
Signs and Symptoms Hemolytic anemia is a term used for a variety of anemias characterized by a low count of red blood cells. Red blood cells are produced by stem cells in bone marrow. They contain hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen in the blood stream throughout the body. Hemolytic anemia occurs when red blood cells have an abnormally short life span. They're destroyed faster than bone marrow can produce them. The term for destruction of red blood cells is "hemolysis." Symptoms of hemolytic anemia may vary with each child. The following are some of the most common symptoms: * Abnormally pale skin as well as jaundice or yellowing of skin and eyes * Confusion * Dark colored urine * Dizziness, weakness or intolerance to physical activity * Enlarged spleen and liver * Fever * Heart murmur * Increased heart rate Symptoms of Hemolytic anaemia can range from mild to severe. It may lead to various health problems such as arrhythmias, an enlarged heart and heart failure. These are caused because of the lack of oxygen in the blood stream, so the heart has to work harder to provide the body with enough oxygen.
The symptoms a person experiences depends on the severity of the condition and the type, as there are different types of hemolytic anaemia.
The most common symptoms are tiredness and weakness due to the lack of oxygen being delivered around the body.
Other symptoms may include:
* Dizziness * Headache * Cold hands and feet * Chills * Enlarged Spleen * Upper abdominal pain (due to an enlarged spleen) * Pale skin * Pale gums * Pale nail beds * Chest pain * Jaundice * Rapid heart rate
What can happen if anemia is not treated?
Hi, I was recently diagnosed with anaemia and as a matter of fact still have it. I hope my answer meets your standard. Before finding this out, I had symptoms like hair loss, dark circles, dizziness and weakness. I was given anaemia tablets and after taking them on a regular basis things got slightly better. I stopped taking the tablets, ( meaning no treatment ) and I realised my level of concentration decreased rapidly. I got more dizzy than ever and I felt really weak. If there isn't much iron in the blood or blood in itself, there won't be a good means of transportation of substances such as glucose/oxygen for energy etc. Just take your iron tablets and eat a variety of iron - rich food like fish, meat and vegetables ( although veggies are nasty ) . All that helps avoid you from undergoing those symptoms. Also in extreme cases, you can breakdown/ collapse/ lose conscience which has happened to me once.
To be on the safe side, take your medications and iron - rich foods.
Hope this helped!

What are the benefits of sickle cell trait?
sickle cell trait is caused by two recessive alleles - meaning both partns must give resessive trait DNA o their child. - sickle cell anemia dose not have a benefit - or if it dose it is out waysd by the fact that people with sickle cell have very low blood oxygen as their blood cellsare dis-formed. however, if there is only one allele- ie they have A and b alleles for sickle cell. then they are more immune to malaria. a deadly parasite passed by misquotes in tropical countries.
