Why are people killing the Baiji Dolphin?

the reason why the they are almost extinct is because people may hurt them like when they take a motor boat there might be a dolphin under them and the motor can scrap them hard enough to make them die and people don't know that they are killing animals... just like the gas we use in our cars it hurts ground animals...

What were the reasons to observe dolphins at Shark Bay?

Shark Bay is a remote area off the coast of Western Australia. Scientists have had many opportunities to study the dolphins of Shark Bay, as these dolphins happily interact with people.

One of the reasons they wanted to observe these dolphins in particular was that it had been noted that dolphins in this area use marine sponges as tools, with the parent dolphins actively teaching their youngsters how to use them. This is quite unique among dolphin populations. Apparently, dolphins use the marine sponges for protection, using them like gloves to protect their sensitive rostrum (snout), while seeking out prey from the rocky seabed. They have also been observed using the sponges as tools to detect bottom-dwelling fish that lack swimbladders, and which cannot be detected by the dolphins' usual methods of vision and echolocation.

Would a dead whale carcass sink or float?

According to Dr. Craig R. Smith, professor of Oceanography at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, great whales that die in the wild are usually in poor nutritional condition and therefore will sink at death. Once the lungs deflate the carcass will sink quite rapidly. If the whale sinks in deep enough water the "hydrostatic pressure will limit the generation of buoyant decompositional gases through reduction of gas volume and increased gas solubility" (Allison et al. 1991). The soft tissue will be removed by scavengers or disintegrate from microbial decomposition long before positive buoyancy can be generated, and the carcass will remain on the seafloor (Allison et al. 1991)

These dead whales are called whale fall. Smith was one of the first scientists to "discover" a naturally occurring whale fall in the late 1980s. His studies of this natural phenomenon have led to the discovery of several new species of deep sea marine life that exist only at whale fall sites.

Smith goes on to say in his chapter entitled Bigger Is Better: The Role of Whales as Detritus in Marine Ecosystems in the book Whales, Whaling and Ocean Ecosystems: "At shallower depths, there is some probability that gas generation could refloat a whale carcass, although this will depend in part on the outcome of competition for soft tissue between scavengers and microbes."

What part of the ocean do porpoise dolphins live in?

Dolphins are mammals so they breathe air unlike fish so they do not really occupy any space on the ocean floor. Different species of dolphins can, however, occupy different oceans and seas and tend to spend most of their time close to the surface of the water so that they can easily breathe the air above.
