What is the vehicle used by the Apollo astronauts on the moon?

While they were on the lunar surface, the astronauts used the Lunar Roving Vehicle, or Lunar Rover, only on the final three missions from Apollo 15 on. This extended the distance they could travel from the Lunar Module. See the Web Link to the left for more information.

Where does NASA want to send astronauts in the future?

2020 they want to send astronauts to the moon. Before that they are sending robots to the moon. NASA wants too have a moon base by 2024 so astronauts could stay there for as long as 6 months. They hope routine missions will happen some where around 2050 are even before. Right now they are finding new ways to survive on the moon. Finding ways to be self sufficient instead relying on earth to give the moon base resources. They have thought of several ways to to produce air. But they also need to have water and food. Well we have found ice on the moon and recently found more then we new about. So that looks good gradation will be a problem but where finding ways to solve that to. After the moon the next step will most likely be Mars. Space travel needs money and good technology. So if we invest more money in space travel we will get more space travel and if NASA finds better and finds cheaper ways to build spacecrafts will have more space travel to.

How long do astronauts stay in space?

About 6 months at a time and in the Russian program 1 year
It depends on the mission actually. It can be weeks or months even a year! However, the problem is when astronauts goes back on Earth. Getting used to gravity again which would take a while depending on how long they stayed in space.
This will depend on how long the space mission is planned for.
It depends on how long their mission is. Normally ranging from 10 days up to a few months but not much longer than that because staying in an enviroment without gravity for too long can weaken the astronaut's muscles. It also depends on how much oxygen and food is taken into space with the space ship.

What do astronauts do?

Astronauts or Cosmonauts are people who are trained by human flight translators to travel to space. The name astronautusually refers to a professional but is actually any person who travels to space. This can be anything from a tourist to a politician. Yes I know this sounds detailed but I am pretty smart for a 14 year old.

Do the astronauts get to take their favorite toothpaste to space with with them?

In the backpack there is computer monitoring temperature so hot or cold liquids can be pumped through suit to keep astronaut comfortable as temps range from well as water for drinking and a tank of oxygen to breathe and a back up oxygen tank and in Apollo suits there included a pipe for going to the toilet.

I think that covers it but might be a few more bits.

How do astronauts keep their ship clean?

There is nothing that is just thrown out in the space so whatever is used by the astronauts is carefully made and has multiple uses. When they pee the urine goes into special kind of machine which purifies it and it is made available for the astronauts as a pure drinking water. So nothing is wasted

-thats really gross

How do space suits keep astronauts cool in the sun and warm in the shade in space?

the suit keep them cool in the sun and warm in the shade is their suits are specially build so that they have air conditioning and their suits are very thick to keep them warm.

Who was the FIRST American astronaut?

The first woman in space was Soviet (Russian) cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova on June 16, 1963.

The first female US astronaut in space was Sally Kristen Ride in 1983. The first African-American female astronaut was Mae Jemison, and the first Hispanic female astronaut was Ellen Ochoa.
The first woman in space was a Cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova (1963).
The first woman Astronaut in space was Sally Ride in 1983.
Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space. She flew on the Vostok 6 mission which was launched on June 16, 1963. (Rendezvoused but did not link with Vostok 5 craft already orbiting.)

Sally Ride was the first American and third woman in space. She flew on the Shuttle Challenger STS-7 mission from June 18-June 24, 1983.

How do astronauts urinate?

Yes they do drink in space, they drink water

Yes, they would die if they didn't drink some water.

The shuttle astronauts carry some of the water needed for themselves and also deliver water to the International Space Station. Over a year 2200 liters are transported at a cost of $US11000 per liter. The ISS also has a Russian built device that processes the humidity in the air and condenses it for drinking and other purposes. On the shuttle, water is produced as a byproduct of the orbiter's fuel cells converting hydrogen and oxygen to electricity.

Because of the massive cost of transporting water, NASA is working on a system that converts many of the astronauts' body fluids - and, yes, that includes urine - into drinkable water. See the Related Link below for the interesting details.

What is it called when an orbiting astronaut floats and feels no gravity?

An orbiting spacecraft or space station continues in orbit because its forward momentum carries it around the planet even as gravity tries to pull it down. So astronauts are literally "falling" toward the Earth when they are in orbit. This "freefall" means that they do not experience the actual acceleration force. Nothing in an orbiting spacecraft experiences effective gravity, so moving around is much easier, and objects have to be secured to prevent them from floating away.

However, objects still have the same mass, so will have the same inertia if moving: an iron weight thrown across the cabin will impact with the same force if it hits something, and a huge satellite in a shuttle launch bay will still require a lot of energy to push from the bay. But the absence of gravity would make exercises such as a one-hand push-up ridiculously easy to do.

What can astronauts do to prevent food from spoiling in space?

the food is freeze dried at extreme temperatures and then sealed into a special foil packet NASA or other space agencies then supply the missions with enough food to last the trip and extra if you get stranded.

the food when you eat it tastes similar to those that you would eat on earth it is like a powder substance and the saliva in your mouth melts the powder turning it into the real deal. while there is no gravity in space it doesn't matter as you don't open your mouth when chewing

What are the age limits for being an astronaut?

As far as age limit, you can't go up after age of 65.

Why do astronauts not go into space when they are on the moon?

The moon has gravity like the earth but not as powerful, yet enough to keep you on the surface

How do astronauts drink water in space?

AnswerI think that an astronaut will have to chase his/her food or if they don't wont to chase it they can hold it VERY tight and eat and make sure that nothing goes flying.

See the Web Link below for the answer and find the 'Space Foods' link within the page.

Try the links below. Especially the picture of the guy drinking and the video. I love the video of the guy drinking so PLEASE watch it.!!!!

Do astronauts gain or lose weight in space?

Once the astronauts are in space they remove their bulky suit. Some of them suffer from space sickness, they gain a little height as there is no gravity there. But once on earth they regain their normal height.

How do astronauts use the bathroom in space?

Very carefully. Space bathroom technology has come a long way over the years (there was a time when astronauts only had adhesive plastic bags as bathrooms), but it's still not exactly comfortable. Aboard the International Space Station, the toilets are designed with no gravity in mind—they use funnels, narrow openings, and vacuums to make sure the waste is contained.

Astronauts even go through special toilet training to make sure they can use the space potty properly, since it's kind of fragile and very expensive—NASA bought one for $19 million in 2008.

What is the best way to become an astronaut?

The good news is, NASA is hiring! They want to get back to the moon by 2024, and they’ll need new astronauts to do it.

The bad news is there are a limited number of jobs, and the qualifications are pretty intense. In addition to a bachelor’s degree, you also must have a master’s degree or two years of PhD work in specific STEM areas. You also qualify if you’re a medical doctor or if you’ve begun or completed a test pilot program. From there, you also need to fit into one of the areas of specialization (two years of biological and medical science, physical science, or engineering and operations work experience, or fit their pilot qualifications).

And of course, you’ll have to be okay with the “extensive travel” required.

Does an astronaut cry tears in space?

Astronauts can cry tears in space. Tears will not run down your face, because there is no gravity, but they don't need gravity to form. When the tears get big enough they will break free of the eye when you blink and will float around in space forever until they freeze.

How did the astronaut keep from floating away on the moon?

There isn't much gravity in empty space, but there is a great deal of gravity near planets, stars, moons and other celestial bodies. The moon has gravity because it has mass. Everything with mass has gravity (including you, albeit a VERY small amount). That's how the astronauts stayed on the moon, and the reason why their movements were slow because the moon has about 1/6 the amount of gravity as Earth.

Why might an astronaut need to carry out a space walk?

For Multiple reasons. 1) There is no air, therefore the astronaut must wear the suit, or rather the suit's helmet to breathe. 2) It protects him from physical damage when handling volatile or dangerous substances/ objects.

Do astronauts require less or more sleep while they are in space?

Astronauts require less sleep than normal; Theoretically because the astronauts always have to be alert in a dangerous setting like space.

What language do the astronauts speak?

Astronauts of different countries working together typically communicate in English.

How long do astronauts stay in space station?

It takes around 5-7 years for someone to become an astronaut. And this is after they already have college degrees and engineering or science experience.
