They dont. Gravity cannot be controlled. In sci-fi, sometimes rotation is used to simulate gravity via centrifugal force, but this has never been done.

On Earth, this would be impossible because of friction. Moving objects hit air particles and start to slow down. In space however, there is no air. It is a complete vacuum. So, free from friction, moving objects keep their speed.
How are astronauts protected in space?
The space suit is what protects the astronauts the most, if they did not have these then there would be no more travelling to the space. Astronauts come across very extreme temperatures but luckily they are protected with their complex "suit of armour" that is snug fit and fully tight. At an altitude of 400 kilometres, the temperature can approximately drop from 120 °C to 150°C in a matter of minutes.

Astronaut Requirements
01.29.04
Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to become a NASA Astronaut? The term "astronaut" derives from the Greek words meaning "space sailor," and refers to all who have been launched as crew members aboard NASA spacecraft bound for orbit and beyond. Since the inception of NASA's human space flight program, we have also maintained the term "astronaut" as the title for those selected to join the NASA corps of astronauts who make "space sailing" their career profession. The term "cosmonaut" refers to those space sailors who are members of the Russian space program.
The crew of each launched spacecraft is made up of astronauts or cosmonauts drawn from the various categories described in these pages. The crew assignments and duties of commander, pilot, mission specialist, or payload specialist are drawn from the NASA professional career astronauts. Mission Applicants for the Astronaut Candidate Program must be citizens of the United States.
Commander and Pilot Astronaut Duties
Pilot astronauts serve as both Space Shuttle and International Space Station commanders and pilots. During flight, the commander has onboard responsibility for the vehicle, crew, mission success and safety of flight. The pilot assists the commander in controlling and operating the vehicle. In addition, the pilot may assist in the deployment and retrieval of satellites utilizing the remote manipulator system, in extravehicular activities, and in other payload operations.
Basic requirements for an Astronaut Pilot include the following:
1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, or mathematics. An advanced degree is desirable. Quality of academic preparation is important.
2. At least 1,000 hours pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft. Flight test experience is highly desirable.
3. Ability to pass a NASA space physical which is similar to a military or civilian flight physical and includes the following specific standards:
Who were the original seven astronauts?
Francis R. Scobee; pilot Michael J. Smith; mission specialists Ronald E. McNair, Ellison S. Onizuka, and Judith A. Resnik; and payload specialists Gregory B. Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe. You can read all about the Challenger disaster, and find links to the biographies of the seven astronauts at the link to your right.
What block chuck yeager of being an astronaut?
Yes, but he wasn't interested or eligible to apply for the astronaut program. He wasn't eligible due to not having a college degree and he wasn't interested because the seven Mercury astronauts weren't selected based on their skills as pilots, they were selected based on their ability to withstand what American scientists guessed were the extreme physical conditions that would be encountered during space flight. Because the astronauts wouldn't really be flying the space craft (which was designed to be flown automatically and remotely from Mission Control), Yeager, as America's hottest test pilot, did not want to become "Spam in a can" as he called the astronauts sitting in their capsule. Essentially he had the right stuff, however he lacked a college degree at the time, thus he wasn't eligible for the initial selection pool. Yes, he did. He was an excellent fighter pilot before becoming a test pilot. He, like many great figher pilots, had vision that was better than 20/20.
How can astronauts wear an outfit that is heavier than they are?
Think about it. A astronaut wears his suit up in space where gavity level is much lower than in earth. If you have a 160 lbs. suit and a 125 lbs. man the suit would be about 25 lbs. in space and the astronaut would still have his strength to hold up his earth weight, 125 lbs. so he could carry his suit easily.
Who was the first woman to become an astronaut?

What is the annual salary of an astronaut?
NASA does not disclose the salaries paid to astronauts, so there's no way of actually knowing how much money an astronaut makes. Further complicating the matter, there's not one salary for astronauts. Here's what we do know. The astronauts who are in the military are on loan from their branch of service. After they become astonauts, they continue to be paid by their service branch, not NASA. Civilian astronauts are paid according to a government scale that ranges from classifications GS-11 to GS-14. In 2012 the minimum salary for a GS-11 employee was $64,724 and a GS 14 was $141,715.
