Unlike the front calipers, pistons in the rear usually have to be rotated to compress them.

You have to buy a cam tool and a crankshaft tool to hold them in TDC. There is a timing mark on the harmonic balancer to get you started. But if you want to try and do it with out the tools get the white out read and mark the TDC of the crankshaft and remove the belt. Next turn the camshafts so that the large hole of the two on the cam is facing the center and mark them. Now pop the sprockets loose (24mm) to ease installation and have at it. The cam sprockets will spin freely and make sure to tighten the tensioner so that you can turn the belt 90 degrees and sung it to 33 foot pounds. and then tighten up the camshaft sprockets.

Just asked my dealer the same question for my 2001. He said 100K or 10 Years.

In a very difficult location since there are four. Get the car up on a hoist to do it.

First, slightly loosen the bolts on the front right wheel. Then, jack up that portion of the car. Now, remove the bolts and the wheel. Disconnect the battery, and secure the connector away from the battery. Now, move under the car and locate the starter connections. Remove the 13 mm nut to undo the heavy gauge wire from the silenoid. Then, pull off the ignition switch starter pulse wire. Using a 16mm ratchet, remove the 16mm bolt from the starter motor. If you need more room for the ratchet, pull the starter forward as you turn the ratchet in. The starter should fall out of place. Finally, find the right angle to get the starter to the opening from where you removed the first 16mm bolt.

Pull the hood open lever on the driver side of car, there should be a tab that slips out from with in the front grill on the right side of the emblem standing in front of the car. If the tab does not come out, lift the hood a little and it should pop out, then pull it and lift.

1 remove the fascia plate the surrounds the switch in the central dash - prise a flat blade screwdriver under the plate and ease off. you meed to pull gently upwards to release.

2. when fascia has been removed- the cup holder should be removed also. Slip a fine flat blade horizontally into each corner of the cup holder and it will spring out there's a connector at the back of the cup holder just remove that also

3. Slide a screwdriver down the left side of the flasher switch. Look and see there is a spring clip attached to the side of the switch. That holds the flasher unit insitu, push the clip intowards the switch and pull gently. Repeat the same clip release thechnique on the flasher switch right hand side.

4. release the connector on the faulty switch and replace the

switch.

For a novice this procedure will take 10 minutes

To gain access to the thermostat you will need to remove the top and front engine covers. You will need to remove the serpentine (ribbed) belt. Take a digital photo or draw a picture of the belt routing before you remove it so you will remember how it goes back on. Mark the direction of rotation on the belt so it can be put back on going in the same direction. Remove the belt by either using a 17mm wrench or socket or a 10mm hex (depending on idler type) to loosen the tension on the idler (clockwise). Insert a nail to small drift in the alignment holes to hold the idler in the loosened position. Remove the ribbed belt. Remove the ribbed belt idler by loosening the 10mm hex head bolt that holds it to the engine block. This is done to facilitate removal of the outer left cam sprocket guard cover. You will then need to remove the lower left most front grill piece (on the front bumper) to gain access to the radiator drain. I use a long piece of 3/8

the thermostat is located behind the waterpump, its kind of a big job to do. if you can find someone to do it, try to find a failsafe thermostat. A failsafe thermo is a thermstat that if it goes bad it will go bad in the open postion. its about a 1000 dollar job, so if there is a problem again, at least you can still drive the car.

Yep Ive got an 98 audi a4 2.8 quattro and it is and interference engine. I found a rebuild kit from blauparts.com and fcpgroton.com If you plan on supercharging it I would recommend getting the high performance belt
