These axles and the Mitsubishi Galant axles get rusted in so tightly, that I have had to take the whole steering knuckle assy off with the axle still attached ad use a hydraulic press to separate the axle. I have also had to just replace the axle, hub/bearing, steering knuckle and backing plate on one also.

I would not drive it very far at all if possible. This is likely a failed coil, causing misfiring and your unburnt fuel will be dealt with by the catalytic converter. That Cat will eventually fail if you continue to drive it. So run the car into your nearest dealer and have them run a computer check on it. The replacement cost for a coil is around $40... a lot cheaper than a catalytic converter...

My 1997 A6 wagon has a fuse box on the SIDE of the DASHBOARD where the driver's door meets the dash board. Open the driver's door and look for a panel that comes off. Hopefully this will help.

If itys a 1.8 four cylinder...its on the exhaust manifold, just prior to the downpipe. It looks like a spark plug screwed into the exhaust manifold with black wiring to it.
