What was the old NASCAR transmission?
They run a clutchless 4 speed, which means, you use the clutch as normal when idling, and starting out, and when down shifting. When up shifting, under full power acceleration, you do not need to use the clutch. There are many companies that make them, Liberty, Linco, ect. They usually work on a planetary gear type design, and/or a throttle cut-off switch. They do not work very well for street use, or, for shifting at low rpm's, however, they do make some that are more suited for such use. They are VERY expensive, and usually come with nickel, or chrome oly cut gears. Way back in the 50's, and 60's, before they came out with a good 4 speed trans, we used to take out the brass syncro's, shave every other tooth off of the slider hub, and make what we called, "crash box's" out of them. With those modifications the Muncie's were stronger, and had to be power shifted, but shifted a lot more smooth at high rpm's.

Why does NASCAR use pushrod engines?
It helps keep speeds down.
A pushrod engine can only turn so many RPMs before the engine isn't able to properly control the valve train. It's called "float." When the valves float, you lose power.
An overhead-cam engine directly controls the valves, so engines set up thusly can turn far faster than pushrod engines. And all else equal, the faster your engine turns, the faster your car goes.
