How much does it cost for ballet?

It depends on which school you go to, at my studio (City Dance Theatre) i am on the 'Unlimited Classes' plan. So it's about $500 tuition a month. Plus if you have other siblings taking lessons it could cost more... plus if you have to purchase your costume/pay costume fees, buy tickets to shows, hair/outfit/shoes supplies, it all adds up for me to well over $5,000 a year.

How does a woman become a ballerina?

Usually, it begins with a young girl or boy who starts out in a ballet class. As they get older and gain more skills, they are taught more precise movements, dances, and become more flexible. From just a regular ballet class, many girls (once advanced enough) will move on to a pointe class (dancing with actual ballet shoes, or "on their toes"). For an older girl or woman just beginning, they will have to go through the same process starting out with a beginner class, but it can be harder to learn with age as a person didn't grow up with their muscles, bodies, and joints being used to certain formations.

What are the best pointe shoes?

It's all dancer preference and also it depends on how advanced you are. Most importantly, it's all about your foot.

I can give some suggestions, though. If you have toes that taper, you must look for boxes that gradually get smaller as you get higher on the box. Grishko Vaganova, Bloch Suprimas, Capezio Aerial, and Capezio Pavlowa are just a few that are great for tapering toes. If you have a squared forefoot, look for a square box. Grishko Elite, Capezio Plie II, and Bloch Serenade are just a few that are great for a squared forefoot. Other things to take into consideration are toe length and arches. Short toes need short vamps, average toes need average vamps, and long toes need long vamps. If you have high arches, you may consider a 3/4 shank, but with low arches, you need more arch support which means stick to a full shank.

Beginners should have a soft and supportive shank.

Advanced dancers can get harder shanks. This depends on how easily the shoe is dying. Sometimes strong feet are able to break harder shanks more easily, but are able to hold up soft shanks.

If your shoe dies very quickly, you should consider a different shank.

Breaking in techniques vary, but never do anything too drastic, such as slamming your shoes in a door or with a hammer. If your shoes are really hard, you can lightly work them with your own hands exactly where your arch is. Wetting the box while wearing the shoe can also help. Obviously, you can't pirouette around your house, but rises going through your demi pointe, at home and before class, always helps to break in your pointe shoes.

I am still searching for that perfect pointe shoe, but I hope this can help you. The only way to find out is to try.

There is no exact shoe size for all companies. It is very different from regular street shoes or flip flops.

Has the costume of ballet changed over time?

Yes. Drastically. Sometimes....most of the time, it depends on the style of ballet, the ballet company and who makes the costumes. For example: The Swan Lake head pieces used to be all feathers. They went on you forehead (where the hair stops) and over your ears. Now they are (ABT style) crowns. A lot of old Russian Vagonava costumes are still in use and it is tradition to use the old costumes for a Nutcracker of Copellia production.

What is the difference between ballet and classical ballet?

Do you mean the difference between neo-classical ballet and classical ballet?

If so, the differences can be very small or very large and depends on many factors such as choreography, music, what year it was created, and style. Neo-classical ballet tends to be more of a mix of contemporary/modern and ballet. Though the movement of the choreography may seem more contemporary like, you will notice that foundation of classical ballet positions, turnout, and posture is still being used throughout the dance. The music tends to be more down-to-earth or more upbeat compared to classical ballet music (example: Tchaikovsky). The costumes follow along with it (example: more of a newer and modern looking costume compared to romantic tutus or flat tutus.

If you are comparing romantic ballet to classical ballet, the difference will seem very insignificant to the untrained eye and many of the factors are almost identical. The feeling and look of romantic ballet is very floaty and soft (example: La Sylphide) and classical ballet tends to have more sharper and defined movement (example Sleeping Beauty). In romantic ballet you will see more longer floaty looking tutus; like dresses. In classical flat tutus are more popular. You will also notice in romantic ballet, the plots are a lot more fiction based and are very fantasized (example: The Wilis in Giselle). While there is still tons of imaginary creatures in classical ballet it is more acting in real life problems. There is practically very minimum difference between the two technique-wise. The term "classical ballet" is mainly used to just define the difference between it and neo-classical ballet.

How often do you have to get new pointe shoes?

It depends on a wide range of aspects: how strong your feet are, how often you dance, what kind of pointe shoes you buy..etc

Serious students might go through a pair in two weeks, whereas a professional wear out a few pairs within one week.

Basically, you need new ones when you current pair no longer support you feet properly - you might want to check this with your teacher.

What is the best brand of pointe shoes?

I've always worn Cecilia Kerche. They last pretty long and are quite comfortable. But everyone's feet are different, and you should always get professionally fitted for your pointe shoes. Good luck !

Why are ballet dresses called tutu's?

The word "tutu" comes from the word cucu. A French rendition of the world cul-cul which means "botty-wotty" (for bottom). There is a unproven legend that the term was first used by commoners who had the lower seats in ballet theatres and had a different angle of viewing the dancers on stage. "Tutu" refers to the area which was seen under the ballerinas' skirts.

Is there a left and right ballet shoe?

Yes and no. When you buy them, there is no definite left or right shoe whether it's a soft shoe or pointe shoe and even some jazz shoes. More in pointe shoes, as you start to wear them you decide which shoe works or feels better on which foot. The only time when you buy them, that I can think of, that you might have a right or left shoe is if one foot is bigger than the other. A lot of people (depending to the size difference) get two different pairs and each pair is a different size.

Do pointe shoes hurt?

No, if fitted properly, they don't have to hurt. Also, always do feet warm ups before you go en pointe. And they will hurt for the first little while, but once they're broken in, you should be fine :)

When you first start, it's really painful. im not going to lie to you. but, once they are broken in and you get used to them, you'll look great.

Has ballet stayed the same?

Actually, ballet has changed dramatically over the years. In the 1500 to 1600, "ballet" was more of a ballroom dance. Also, they didn't use stages of platforms until the later 1600. Another thing is that in the early 1600, ballet was mainly for men. The women wore tight corset, long, heavy skirts, and wigs. Because of this they could only move from pose to pose. Pictures of basic arms and feet position?

It says that you categorized this in "Philippine's Dance", but you also categorized it in ballet...? I'll tell you the site to go to for ballet, but I don't know what site you should go to for Philippine's Dance. Go to this site for ballet: http://www.danceclass.com/ballet-positions.html and F.Y.I.these pictures aren't the best. The 4th and 5th positions should be a lot more crossed (I'm talking about the feet pictures). But I hope these are good enough! (:

Ok, I just looked back on the pics of the arms, and they aren't correct. Go to this site: http://dance.about.com/od/ballet/ss/Arm_Positions_6.htm It isn't that different, but it's better than the first site.
