Bananas go through a unique process known as negative geotropism. Instead of continuing to grow towards the ground, they start to turn towards the sun. The fruit grows against gravity, giving the banana its familiar curved shape. So bananas developed a way of growing towards the light without destabilizing the plant.
Why were bananas rationed in world war 2?
U.S. soldiers were given Hershey's chocolate bars in rations. It was considered a great snack for boosting energy.
Actually the exact opposite is the case. Not withstanding Hogan's Heroes where bribes are routinely paid to Shultz in the higly prized "AMERICAN CHOCOLATE", the real bar provided to American troops in WW2 was a special order bar bearing no resemblance to a chocolate bar any of us would buy at a store. It in fact was so bad, so difficult to eat, and so hard on the digestive system, that it was a useless product for the most part.
You must remember that his chocolate bar was an US Military design, not a Hershey design (it was produced by Hershey Chocolate). The US Military wanted an emergency rathion, not a treat for the soldiers and so they put forth a set of requirements for the bar among them being:
1) the bar must be temperature resistant so that it would not melt in the field
2) it must provide approximately 1800 calories
3) it must taste only slightly better than a raw potatoe
Yes, these were the requirements of the bar. The thinking was that if the bar tasted even remotely good, then soldier would eat the bar anytime they wanted a treat, rather than saving it as an emergency ration. Unfortunately, Hershey was too good at its job. The bar was indeed temperature resistant to about 120F., it did provide the requested caloric quantity, and it tasted bad, was hard to eat, and caused indigestion on most occassions.
As a result, the bar was pretty much a failure, for the army, and a great success to Hershey. Hershey received no less than five awards of Excellence from the US Govenment for the bar and its variations over the years. But in the field the bar was rarely eaten and instead was either thrown away, or if possible traded to anyone who did not yet know how bad it was for anything more palatable.
In the defense of Hershey Chocolate, they did indeed to a some excellent work with the bar. They met the requirements the US Military put to them. In the processes they had to invent an entirely new way to make chocolate bars. And they did over the years by request, make several attempts to improve the bar in various ways. They even made it resistant to poison gas at one point through its packaging.
To recap, the LOGAN bar as it was called in WW2 is nothing like a "real" chocolate bar and was not enjoyed by anyone.
How long for the fruit of the banana tree to grow?
A banana is actually a plant, not a tree. After it grows for about 18 months, it has one bunch of fruit and then dies. Other plants which have arisen from the base of the plant continue the cycle.
What is the chemical formula for banana?
The flavour of a banana comes largely from Isoamyl Acetate, but the banana itself does not have a chemical formula.
Bananas are actually quite healthy and full of potassium. They do contain a fair amount of sugar, which should be limited, but they have a decent amount of important nutrients and are healthy overall.
Is banana good for your stomach?
If you eat bananas on an empty stomach it will make your stomach hurt because they contain compounds called protease inhibitors which help eliminate bacteria in the stomach but unfortunately they have also been pinpointed as a primary cause of stomach ulcers and stomach ulcers don't do well without food. I've been growing cassava on small parts of my 200 rai (1 rai= 0.4 acres = 0.16 hectares) for some 10 years now; I operated a cassava, mungbean, maize rotation system in the past but alternated the pattern so that I always had all crops growing each year in different fields. My main interest, however, was breeding cattle, then fattening pigs. Despite my lack of firm attention, and fairly minimal fertilisation, my cassava harvests normally yielded 3-4 toone per rai. With better practises this year, I expect to achieve 5 tonne per rai at next harvest. I do not consider myself an expert but I'm happy to share my knowledge based on both my experiences and research. The following represents an intentionally brief outline of how to grow the crop. There is an abundance of information to be had on the Internet should you Google Cassava or Tapioca. Cassava is also known as tapioca, manioc, yucca, etc. It is known as man sapalang in Thai. This crop can be planted anytime.
How many bananas can you eat before dying?
No, 14 bananas should have no harmful effects. The idea for potential harm comes from a possibility to exceed the amount of potassium your body can handle. To get to an unhealthy and possibly lethal level of potassium you would have to consume over an estimated 250 bananas (or 883 pounds) at one time. By the time you reach 250 your body has already processed some of the earliest consumed potassium so the actual number will be higher. Due to the size of your stomach and how much food you can put through your body during a day, in practice it might be impossible to reach lethal levels.
Many might belive or think that an apple tastes sweet, or they might not. It can also depend on the variety of apple.
When a green banana turns yellow a sit ripens. What kind of change is taking place?
What causes a banana's peel to turn brown or black and what causes the fruit to ripen are two different things. A banana's peel turns brown due to an enzyme (polyphenyl oxidase), which is naturally found in the banana. The enzyme polymerises phenols in the banana skin into polyphenols. Polyphenols are similar to melanin, the pigment responsible for the color in our skin. This is what blackens the skin of the bananas.
The enzyme that makes bananas sweet is called amylase. Amylase breaks down the starch in the banana fruit. When the starch is broken into its smaller sugar components, called glucose, the banana tastes sweet. The enzyme that softens the banana is called pectinase. Pectinase breaks down the cell walls in the banana fruit so that it is less firm.
Do bananas contain radioactive potassium?
Bananas are relatively high in potassium, but you need 4,700 mg of potassium per day and you'd have to eat about 11 bananas every day to get that. Potatoes are higher, at about 950 mg if you eat the skin as well. This all gets a lot harder if you're on a low/no carb diet. Eat Leafy green vegetables, red meat. Use No Salt (half salt/half potassium) and take a supplement. Very few humans can get all of what they need just from food every day.
