Barbecue chicken is believed to have originated in the Caribbean, particularly among the indigenous Taíno people who used a method called "barbacoa" to cook meat over an open flame. This technique was later introduced to the Americas by European colonizers. Santa Maria barbecue traditionally uses oak wood, specifically California live oak, for its cooking process. Most people would say John Silver was named "Barbecue", because he was the cook on the Hispaniola.

There is, however, another story, one which had happened much earlier.

The case is documented in Denis Judd's novel "Long John Silver", a book which describes Silver's life from his birth in Bristol in 1716 to the day in 1765 when Jim Hawkins enters the Spyglass Tavern, and which is considered to be a de facto prequel to "Treasure Island".

According to the book, Silver was about 16 when he became a sailor - running away from authorities after being jailed for taking part of a gang of smugglers, he boarded the "Osprey", a slave ship under Captain Feeney. The vessel was going from England to the Guinea coast of West Africa, where he would get a load of slaves, which then would be sold in the West Indies and the ship would cross the Atlantic back to England.

During his first tour, on the Guinea coast, Silver was given the task to brand the slaves with a hot iron. Being young and still quite naive, he refused. The other sailors would then mock him and question his manhood. One of the sailors said that it's not a big deal and it would smell like barbecue. Provoked by the mocking, Silver branded the poor slave and it was all over. As a result for these actions, the sailors from then on would mockingly call him "Barbecue". One of them was Gabriel Pew, the blind man who gave Billy Bones the Dark mark and who was a very close friend to Silver.

There are essentially two styles of barbecue. Genuine barbecue, and grilling which some people confuse with barbecuing (mostly non-Southerners). The main difference is the temperature and time spent cooking the meat. Grilling is a high heat method which usually doesn't take more than 10-15 minutes or so. Barbecuing is a low heat method which tends to last anywhere from several to 18 hours depending on the size of the meat.

Yes, cooking with propylene gas should be ok to cook on. It is very similar to propane. Obviously it is highly flammable so use typical precaution with storage and handling as you would with propane. Combustion of the gas produces carbon monoxide (like propane), so it is always necessary to have adequate ventilation to decrease risk of asphyxiation (simple asphyxiant) hazard).

Tomato paste is more concentrated than tomato sauce, so I would just add a little water until it is of sauce-like consistency.
