What is Ground rule double?

A ground rule double is when a batted ball is ruled fair by the umpires and the ball bounces and goes over or is touched by a player and goes over an outfield wall. In this case, the umpires rule that the batter will be awarded a double.

AnswerWhen the ball hits the ground in fair territory, then bounces over the wall.

It cannot be a homerun, and the fielder cannot get to the ball, so it is a "Ground Rule Double"- the runner goes to second base, and all base runners can advance two bases.

Correction. What is described above is actually an example of an Automatic Double. People who do not know the rules of baseball have mistakenly called this a ground rule double. A ground rule double would be an award of a double that only applies to a specific ball park based on that park's quirky field. Currently there is no park in the MLB that has a ground rule double.

How many feet farther do you need to run for a triple than a single in baseball?

The bases are 90 feet apart.

From home plate to first base is 90 feet. From home plate to second base is 180 feet. From home plate to third base is 270 feet. From home plate around the bases and back to home plate is 360 feet. (That's farther than from goal line to goal line in football.)

From first base to third base is 180 feet.

Why is it do hard to hit a home run?

The ball is small and fast. Less than a 3 inches in diameter and moving at around 80mph or more in most cases. You have to have a good eye just to be able to make contact. If you can make contact, then you have to be able to have enough power in your swing to send the ball flying at least 320 ft at the foul line or as much as 400 ft at center field to make it over the wall. This means that you have to swing hard on the ball in order to get enough force to send it out of the park.

You also have to hit the ball at the sweet spot of the bat.
Hitting a home run is very tough. You have to make perfect contact, right swing, great bat swing, and right circumstances. Many people don't have the physical strengh or fundamentals to hit a home run. The circumstances have to be perfect.

This could be a vague reference to Charles Grimm, known as "Jolly Cholly," who played for the Cubs from 1925-1936. Grimm was a southpaw who batted and threw left handed. A game bat came up for auction recently (2009) that comes from the time Grimm played for the Cubs, attributed to "Charles Lefty Grimm," that appears to have sold for $500.

When the ball is bunted down the first base line who should field the ball?

it depends on where it is. if it is near home plate the catcher should get it. if it is closer to the pitchers mound than the catcher than the catcher should get it. you should call the other guy off if you are getting it so there will be no confusion on who is getting it.

Why was New York Yankee Phil Rizzuto released from the New York Yankees?

The Yankees had selected Enos Slaughter off waivers from the Kansas City Athletics and needed to release someone to make room for him on the active roster.

Phil's offensive and defensive production had been going downhill and he was 38 years old. He lost the starting shortstop job in 1955 and had played in only 31 games in the 1956 season when he was released on August 25.

To fill the vacancy at shortstop the Yankees had Gil McDougal play that position on a full time basis.

well for the rectangular prism its: H x W, H x L, L x W

L- length

W- Width

You saw three tigers picked off first base in the same inning can anyone confirm when that happened?

No ... maybe you can supply a little more info?

There were three Toronto Blue Jays picked off of first base in the 10th inning of a game against the Baltimore Orioles on August 24, 1983 by left hander Tippy Martinez.

The Orioles had pinch hit for their second string catcher in the bottom of the ninth and had no catcher to play in extra innings. They selected Lenn Sakata, an infielder, to be the catcher in the 10th inning.

Martinez replaced Tim Stoddard after Stoddard had given up a lead off home run and single. Knowing the Blue Jays would be running against Sakata Martinez, who had an excellent pick off move, picked off the runner although the official scoring went as a caught stealing as the runner attempted to advance to second and was thrown out by the first baseman. Martinez then walked the next batter and picked him off and followed that by giving up an infield single and picking that runner off.

Ironically, Sakata won the game for the Orioles in the bottom of the 10th with a three run home run.

I cannot except to say I believe it was in the 70s or 80s. Thank for the blue jay answer, Din't realize it happened to them as well.
