Lincoln had a broader sense of the war other than freeing slaves and that was self government and democracy. Lincoln felt that 'All men should be created equal' and this included freeing the slaves. He was also saying in around about way when America became a Nation. Lincoln was a compassionate man and detested the wages of war, but it was necessary and to honor the dead the war was fought bravely and he did not want these men to die for nothing. How many rivers were at the battle of fort Sumter?

Fort Sumter is in Charleston Harbor, in Charleston, South Carolina. The city of Charleston is at the tip of a peninsula formed by the Ashley River on one side and the Cooper River on the other. These rivers flow from the interior of the state and empty into Charleston Harbor, and thence into the sea. The Harbor is an inlet from the ocean, with several islands around the mouth providing additional protection from the waves of the sea.

Fort Sumter is built on an artificial island in the Harbor. Sailing ships, when empty, would pile rocks in the cargo hold so they would not ride too high in the water. Ships arriving in ballast (loaded with rocks) in Charleston would dump the rocks overboard so they could load cargo. They dumped their rocks in the same place until eventually a huge pile underwater was nearing the top of the water. About that time the US government decided to build a fort in Charleston, and added more rocks to finish the artificial island.
