She soon signed a contract with Columbia Records with a pay of 2000$/week. She soon could afford her own railroad car which protected her from racism. During the lean years, she couldn't receive the demanded pay so the company lost money. The company soon recovered during the swing era. Her journey ended on her way back from one of her performances in a car accident.

Bessie could have cared less about politics and in those days black weren't allowed to vote so it really didn't matter. Bessie was 100% show biz and loved life and loved having a good time. She didn't care about politics. She couldn't read and write well either so unless she was told something she didn't read about the latest political aspects in the newspaper.

She was a singer, dancer, comedian and had traveling shows but was most noted for her phenomenal voice. Columbia being a major label has the means and money to promote and produce Bessie's records. She was dubbed, "Empress of the Blues."
