What bird is black?

Depending on the species of blackbird, and what folklore you are looking at, they can mean different things. They have been considered messengers of great change, speakers for the dead, and a warning of some kind. Blackbird is a pretty generic term.

The Romany (Gypsies) see crows as surrounded by mystery and exceptionally wise. To see one crow is a sign of coming sorrow, two means joy.

They also have a number of beliefs about rooks (another black bird). It is said it is fortunate to have a colony of rooks on your property, however if they should suddenly abandon their rookery disaster will follow. It is also supposed to be inviting misfortune to shoot a rook.

There is an old English rhyme about crows that goes something like this:

One is for bad news, two is for mirth.

Three is a wedding, four for a birth.

Five is for riches, six is a thief,

Seven a journey, eight is for grief.

Nine is a secret, ten is for sorrow,

Eleven is love and twelve is joy on the morrow.

What do you put in hummingbird feeders?

Someone wrote: It drinks boiled water cooled of with red or orange food coloring mixed with sugar.

Actually, food coloring is not good for them or necessary. Some people use it to attract the hummers, but it's better to use a red feeder. Once they find you, they don't care about colors.

The mixture is sugar & water. You don't have to boil the water, it just needs to be hot enough to dissolve the sugar. The ratio is 4 water to 1 white sugar (like mix 2/3 cup of hot water to 1/3 cup of sugar).

What is the name of a brown bird with a white belly and black on the tip of its feathers with a ring around its neck?

The Northern Flicker is found almost everywhere in North America. The Eastern and Midwest United States have the Yellow-Shafted Flicker and the West has the Red-Shafted Flicker. The Gilded Flicker of the southwest is very similar to the Red-Shafted Flicker.

The northern populations of the Northern Flicker are migratory, with fall migration taking place September to November. Flickers measure 13" with a wingspan of 18"-21" and they are seen in most suburban environments and forest edges.

Unlike most other woodpeckers, Northern Flickers are mainly ground feeders, eating ants, termites, caterpillars, crickets, grasshoppers, other insects, spiders, berries, seeds, and nuts. They do come to feeders for seeds and suet.

The yellow shafts of the feathers and its habit of flicking its bill give the Yellow-shafted Flicker its name. Both males and female yellow-shafted have a gray crown with a prominent red chevron on the back of the head and a speckled breast. Only the male Flicker has a black mustache.

Unfortunately the Flicker populations appear to be declining. Some contributing factors might be due to the loss of nesting sites in dead trees and competition with other cavity nesting birds.

How long do Snowy Owls live?

What to do with a bird nest?

Leave it alone.

First of all, it is illegal under the Migratory Bird Act, it is illegal to disturb the nests of native birds (although, if is in the way of something, I doubt they will care if you move it a few feet after the birds have left).

Second of all, for your own health. Birds have many lovely parasites that can take up residence in their nests - ticks, lice, etc. They can also carry diseases that you really don't want to get.

Third, nature will do her thing. Most likely, within a few months the elements will have either blown the nest away in its entirety, or will have destroyed most of it.
