What phrases from the story The Midnight Fox describe the setting?
In "The Midnight Fox" by Betsy Byars, phrases that describe the setting include vivid depictions of the rural landscape, such as "the fields stretched out like a patchwork quilt" and "the dark woods looming at the edge of the farm." The atmosphere is often conveyed through descriptions of the night, with imagery of "the moonlight filtering through the trees" and "the quiet sounds of the night." These elements create a sense of isolation and adventure, immersing readers in the story's natural surroundings.

What is the book ''sounder'' about?
The main setting of this story back in then day deep on the woods. The other settings were in the cabin that the boy lived in, in the jail his dad was thrown in, on the road the boy walked, at the boys teachers house, and outside of the school. The main characters are the boy and Sounder. Some other characters that were in talked about in the stoy were The mother, the father, the children, the white men, the jail gard, the school teacher, and the children in the school.
Sounder
Sounder was the voice of the family. When Sounder got shot the family fell apart. Sounder was a great hunt dog. He would always be there when the boy need help. He was the boys best friend. Everyone loved him even the mother. Sounder got shot because he tried to protect the father from the white men. I liked sounder the most out of all of the characters. To me Sounder was not a dog. He was a hero who looked out for his family. I was sad when Sounder died.Sounder was a good dog. I tink he did not deserve to be shot.
The boy
The boy was very smart. I admire him for being such a man and taking care of his family. Through his father going to jail and his dog got shot the boy barely dropped a tear. Even though he is just a kid think he is a leader. The reason why I think this is because the boy worked a job everyday and went to school. He filled in for his father and took care of his family. He also took apon himself to search for his father almost everyday. The boy would not give up. He would not let racissum get to him. He was determined like all great leaders . The boy was my second favorite character in this story.
The main idea of this story was The family has no voice without Sounder. This story mainly shows how Sounder changed the familys life. It shows how he got them trough hard times.
There were 3 problems in this story. One was The dad was taken to jail so the man of the house was now the boy. The second problem of this story was Sounder had got shot and he was nowhere to be found. And the third problem was the man was hurt very badly in the dynamite explosion.
To me the end was interesting. The fact that the dad was still walking after the dynamite exploson was intersting. This was interesting because in the story it states one side of his body was paralyzed. So how could he drag himself down the road without falling?I really enjoyed reading this story. I loved how the author was not afriad to express his feeling through the characters. This story had alot of detail and discriptive words. The author put his heart and soul into writting this book.I think if there was a part 2 to this book iIwould definatly read it.This book is one I want to add to my collection.I learned that when hard times ho you must do what you have to do to get throuh it.I learned alot from this story. This story tought me a lesson in life. The lesson is stick with your family.
The man found a dog and he named him Sounder. He took him home with him to be their dog. Sounder is a half redbone and half bulldog. The man bought him home to go hunting with him. Sounder is there to help the family in the winter.Sounder finds carcasses so that the family can sell them.So far Sounder is the only help the family has.Later on down the line the Father got arrested. He had stolen a ham from town when no one was around. The white men that came around to arrest him called him a lying thief. The man told the boy to get control of the dog but he was unable to. So when Sounder got loose to bark at the men they shot him in the head. After that Sounder hit the ground and did not move. Later he got up and left. Sounder was nowhere to be found!
So far the boy did not visit his father in jail. He was ordered to watch his sibling while the mother goes to town. She ordered him not to go out of "hollering distance". So while he was gone he looked ouside around the house for Sounder. He still did not find him.He made a promise to himself that when he finds him he will burry him if he is dead. The boys mother was coming down the road by the time he fed the children. When his mother got in he went to go get wood for the stove. When he got back in the house him and his mother discussed what happened in town an what she had bought. Then they talked about Sounder.By that time the mother had started baking a cake. While he did that he boy went out to look for Sounder. When he got in he felt emptyness in the cabin, So he asked him mom to tell him a story. but she didnt answer.
The next day the boy walked through the woods searching or Sounder. When he got back his mom told him to stop looking The lord will bring him home. The boy walked away. When Christmas time came around the mother had 2 cakes. A big one for those in the the cabin and a small one for his dad.The mother said "child go to the prison and give this to your dad". So he got dressed and headed out the door to deliver the cake to his dad. On the way there he felt like people were peering at him. When he finally got to the jail the bull-necked man grasped the cake box from him and went in it. He said in a despicable voice "I must check to see if the cake got something in it!" Then he began to perish the cake. Then he shoved it into the boys hands and showed him were his father was.The boy began to talk aout Sounder to his father. Then visiting hours were over. The father said "Tell your mother not to send you anymore". The boy disjectedly left.
The boy went home. When he got there he told his mom what happened exspecting to hear "you gieved him child" but the mother did not respond. The boy warmed his body by the stove. Then he went to sleep. The next morning he heard a whine at the door. He thought he was dreaming but then it happned again. He went to open the door. There Sounder was sitting on the porch. The family celebrated. It has been weeks since the boy seen his father. He was very distraught. Later o his mother went to work. She asked a person to read her the couthouse updates. They told her there was a dynamite blast in the jail camp and several people were hurt or dead. Now the boy is even for distraught about his father.
The next day the boy went to every prison worksite trying to find his dad.The guards would always say mingy things to him and run him off. When he got home he asked his mother to tell him a story. She asked " why do you want to hear the same story over and over again"? He said " The people in the stories are so brave and strong, they always come out as winners." So The mother finally told him a story. Then he laid in his bed and fell slowly asleep. The next morning the boy contined the inquest for his dad. He ended up hurting his fingures at one prison camps. On the way back he seen a guy threw away a book. So he waited for him to leave then he went and grabed the book. Then he began walkimg down the road. He came upon a schoolhouse. He went over and asked one of the kids can he use the water pump. The kids started asking him questions. Then a little pig ran over and set off the dogs. Then the teacher came out and calmed them all down. The boy asked the old man could he wash his hands. The man pumped the water while the boy washed hs hands, the old man said you need to come to my place and wrap it up. So the old man went inside to grab his paper and then they left. Then when they got there they cleaned his cuts and wraped his hands. The old man said " Its too late for you to go back home i will lay out a cot for you. Tell me about yourself." then they began to talk.
Then the boy went home. It turns out that the boys father was hurt very badly in jail.He was one of the many that got hurt in the dynamite blast. When he went to the hospital they told him he was going to die soon. He was limping down the road. The boy and his family were happy to see his dad was home. Right before his father got all the way down the road Sounder let out a great bark to let them know some one was coming. His father was paralyzed on one side of his body. Later on in the week his father had died. They barried him behind the old meeting house. Not too long after the father died the boy set off to go back to school. Before he left he dug a hole in the woods for when sounder would die. He said Sounder would die before he got home again. And sure enough Sounder died two weeks before the boy could make it home for Christmas.....but Sounder
was much remembered as the dog who gave that famiy its voice!
This story reminds me of how my anncestors lived back in the day. It reminds me of how even though slavery doesnt exisit today how there are still racist people. This story is just how life was for many people back in the day. My personal connection in my own like is when the dog got shot. and how the boy had to be strong and be there for his family. It reminded me of when I had to be there when my family was going throgh hard time.Even though iIdid not have to act as the boy did it was still similar.
What experience causes bigger to look with disgust at his family's tenement room?
i think it had to do with the fact that he lived in the Dalton's home, which is nice, and that made him realize he lived in a tenement (a run-down apartment house barely meeting minimal standard) room. it says it in the book on pg 105and that part was the only one talking about the room, the others talked about how they were 'blind'. how it helps the next person who sees this answer

Charlie appeared to be suffering from fear, insecurity and fear of the war-ridden world. He was looking for an escape from this world. His longing for some idyllic and peaceful place like Galesburg made him stray to a corridor at Grand Central Station that took him to the Third Level of the station from where one could take train to the past, year 1894.
When he shared this incidence with his wife, she felt angry at it; she asked him to see his psychiatrist friend, Sam. Sam explained the unique experience to be Charlie’s waking dream wish fulfillment. He further explained it could have happened because of his unhappiness or hobby of stamp collection.
