What is the best way to convince dad to let you join Boy Scouts?

Not sure why you would have to convince your dad to let you join? Boy Scouts is an organization of young men that strives to give its members the knowledge, skills, and life lessons to help them mature and succeed as they become adults Time spent in Boy Scouts benefits a boy in many ways. The friends he makes, the work ethic and morality he develops, the community service he practices and the knowledge and skills he gains will help him throughout the course of his life. Even long after the days in Boy Scouts are over, the man still remembers that he should be courteous and kind and do a good turn daily. Ask your Father to join with you as a Assistant, The scouts are always looking for individuals interested in the success of their kids, if you want further info feel free to contact me I am a Father who has both of my Sons in Scouts. good luck!!

Answer:

Your father may object to the scouts for several reasons:

  • There are many paramilitary aspects of the scouts (uniforms, ranks, structure) that he may find objectionable.
  • Scouting groups may be associated with religious practices or locations which he may find objectionable
  • He may have personal issues with the staff of the local group
  • His own experience with scouting may have been bad
  • Scouting organizations have been accused of not allowing the participation of atheists, agnostics, or homosexuals. Alternately if your local troop is permissive on this, he may object to that position
  • In these economically difficult times the costs may be a factor. He may also have time commitments that prohibit transporting you to scouts or supporting your activities.
  • There has been a lot of fear-mongering about pedophile scoutmasters

Find out his reasons to object to your belonging to the group (talk it over). You might agree with him, he might see your side.

Where can you find resources for the Ad Altare Dei religious emblem?

"The purpose of the Ad Altare Dei (to the altar of God) program is to help Catholic Boy Scouts of the Roman Rite develop a fully Christian way of life in the faith community. The program is organized in chapters based on the seven Sacraments. The seven Sacraments are a primary means toward spiritual growth."

You will need a trained religious emblems counselor- your church or diocese should be able to help you find one.

You will also need the Ad Altare Dei Scout Manual and the Catholic Bible. You can get the manual through your local Scout Shop, the diocese or ScoutStuff.org.

Full requirements are available from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting.[linked]

How many service hours are required for Eagle Scout?

There is no set requirement for the number of service hours to earn Eagle Scout. You are probably referring to the service project component of the rank. One of the requirements for Eagle Scout is to "plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project". The project needs to benefit an organization other than the Boy Scouts.

These projects can be fairly simple or quite elaborate. The often overlooked key is leadership. The Scout must involve others in his project. Projects must be approved by an Eagle Board of Review and this group will determine if the project is substantial enough to qualify.

The project must be a significant contribution to the community, and a significant challenge to the Scout. There is no set minimum, and that is explicitly stated in the Boy Scout literature. Statistics would suggest that the average project involves about 200 person hours including planning and carrying out the project, but there have been projects well over 1000 hours, and some as little as 100 hours.
The last eagle scout in our troop needed 96 hours to the best of my knowledge.
