Bulldogs

Originally bred to bait bulls in medieval times the bulldog was built to endure rough treatment. Once bull-baiting was outlawed in the 1800's the breed nearly faced extinction. Thanks to many dedicated hobbyists the breed was brought back from the brink and selectively bred into the docile easy-going dog you see today. Questions regarding the care and history of bulldogs are welcome here.

Do English Bulldogs have a lot of flatulence?

Yes! I have had my adult English Bulldog for a little over two years. While she has always had a flatulence "problem" recently it has gotten severe! Scouring the internet and meeting with our vet suggests that she is suffering from food allergies. I love my Bully but she is the only dog that I've known that makes noise when she passes gas! She can sneeze and do it, stretch and do it or lie there and do it all night long. The other night it was so bad that my Great Dane got up and left the room, opting to sleep alone in the back bedroom. (And he is a snuggle bug). I hope the diet change helps. Cross your fingers for us!

What can you do for your English bulldog that is congested until you can get her to the vet?

Answer

This is a common trait in bulldogs of all breeds. Do what you would with a baby. Take the dog into your bathroom and turn on the hot sink tap, the hot tub tap and let that steam roll around in there. Sit with the dog and this should ease up some of the breathing problems, but this is strictly a band-aid and get your pet into the vets ASAP! If your regular vet is not available or is unwilling to take you immediately then go to an emergency vet's office even though it will cost you more.

Another way is to go into one room and use a humidifier. You can buy very cheap ones at a drug store that they used years ago. Put Vicks liquid or Vicks sauve on the lip of the kettle as it boils and that will help loosen up congestion. If the dog is really congested sometimes it also helps to drop a few drops of lemon juice down the dog's throat.

How soon can you re-breed an English bulldog?

The dog should not be bred until she is mature, around 2 years of age. You should also make sure she is a good example of the breed and has had her heath checks done. In other words, you should only be breeding to "better" the breed, not just for money. Females come into heat approximately every 6 months. Do not breed her on her very next heat cycle after she has whelped out pups. It is too hard on her body. Wait for the next heat cycle after that one. Remember that the English Bulldogs do have a lot of health issues and your female should be an outstanding example of the breed to be bred. You don't wish to pass on those genetic faults that she might have if you have not checked her out thoroughly. Talk to another breeder who is recognized in the breed. Educate yourself on the breed itself before breeding. Go to a local all breed Dog Show and talk to the breeders there, after they are through showing of course.

They can't think very straight and aren't the smartest of dogs, which cause people to think that they're crazy.

Is a bulldog nice?

Bulldogs used to be extremely muscular and strong- they were originally bred to bait bulls so they had to be incredibly strong and tenacious or they were at risk of loosing their lives. However, since bull-baiting became illegal in the 1800's the bulldog breed has changed dramatically- the features that made the bulldog once a very successful bull baiter were exaggerated and consequently the overall sturdy, athletic dog turned into a stocky (yet adorable) couch potato.

What age do bulldogs stop growing?

Dogs stop growing upward by about 10-12 months of age. They continue to mature (fill out) for up to another year, especially males. Yes, the head is the last thing to finish out. Small dogs reach maturity at a faster rate. A Maltese is full grown by 5-9 months where a Bull Mastiff is still growing at age 23 months. There is no real set rule though many breeds do have charts that can provide estimated size at different ages.
