Bulldogs

Originally bred to bait bulls in medieval times the bulldog was built to endure rough treatment. Once bull-baiting was outlawed in the 1800's the breed nearly faced extinction. Thanks to many dedicated hobbyists the breed was brought back from the brink and selectively bred into the docile easy-going dog you see today. Questions regarding the care and history of bulldogs are welcome here.

A 2 part question for you dog experts what is the cutoff age that an American bulldog female can be bred and can I breed her with a boxer is there any known issues both dogs are purebreds?

Cutoff age is generally around 5 or 6 years old, before they become a "senior" and the earliest you should ever breed a female should be their third season. For both guidelines this is because breeding and whelping are harder on their bodies before or after that time. And of course the health and safety of your female should be your first concern.

I don't suggest breeding to a boxer... stick to their own breed. If you are trying to produce puppies with traits, body structure, or markings that the boxer has and your female doesn't... try to find that in another American Bulldog. Physically yes it would work and I don't have anything against boxers, they are a wonderful breed, but there is no reason to cross breed when each breed has their own qualities that don't need to be changed. Every breed in the world has their own health risks, however I am not a vet and you should always research the breed, talk to established quality breeders and always talk to your vet and even get a few other vets opinions.

hope this helps, good luck and just remember it's a lot of work breeding, make sure you're doing it for the right reasons.

Why are most male Americans circumcised?

Doctors have for many years said there are big health benefits and that the risks are much bigger to get cancer, Aids, infections etc when uncut so many parents don't want to risk it and now it has also become tradition and many likes the appearance. I've also heard moms being scared their son will be teased in the locker room. The medical risks when uncut are extremely small and it's healthier for your child you just teach him how to wash and keep clean and use a condom when that day comes instead of making this decision for him.

Just normal cleanliness is all that is required There is no evidence that the intact penis is any more likely to become diseased. And the risk of penile cancer is 1 in 100.000 and then in old men that have problems with sanitation bed riden for instance. The USA has a very high rate of circumcision and along with it a very high rate of HIV infections> while in Europe circumcision is relatively rare and seen as genital mutilation they on the other hand have a far lower HIV rate, not to mention all kinds of penile problems that are the result of being genitally mutilated through circumcision. The reason Many Americans are being circumcised is because they are being hoodwinked by their doctors. There is big money in the circumcision business including a market for baby foreskins.

Yes and no,

An Alapaha bulldog is a great athletic/working dog but hunting isn't exactly what they were made to do since they're short muzzle makes it hard for them to track anything. And they also don't posses an instinctual drive to retrieve things for their masters.

Why do people like to breed English bulldogs?

This is a person's personally prefrence. It depends on what you're looking for in a dog, etc. I happen to like Bulldogs for their loving big eyes and pug noses that make their face squish together into little rolls and wrinkles. c: Bulldogs do have quite a few health problems though, and no dog should be adopted based on just looks.

Why are English shotguns so expensive?

The expense of an English shotgun is comprised of two elements primarily, time and materials. The more costly of these by far is time. There can easily be over 1000 man hours involved in the building of an English shotgun. So much of the work required is "hand" work. The filing needed to fit the different pieces is quite time consuming. Also, the finishing of the wood calls for many hand rubbed coats of finishing compounds. The expense of the time necessary to build a gun is increased even more by the skill level of the gunmaker. Many in the business, serve years as an apprentice before being allowed to actually assist in the making of a gun. The skill level certainly equals that of any "master" craftsman. As to the material cost, the biggest expense is in the wood. The world supply of finely grained walnut suitable for gun stocks diminishes each year as the demand for English guns increases. A highly grained piece of wood know as a "blank" can cost upwards of $5000 or more and this is before any work has been done. This is a pretty short explaination but I hope it answers the question.
