Remove R/F door trim. Remove paper water deflector. Do it carefully. It needs to be reinstalled. Lower motor and track approx 1 inch. Slide track off of plastic rollers and remove from door. Loosen and remove 2 window mount bolts ( see new glass for locations) Mount new glass along with nylon insulators. Tricky now, need to tilt and turn to put it back into and onto tracks. LUBRICATE TRACKS with white lithium grease.

To bleed the brakes on a 1985 Cadillac Fleetwood, start by ensuring the brake fluid reservoir is full. Have an assistant press the brake pedal while you open the valve to release air and fluid, then close the valve before they release the pedal. I've recently acquired a 1988 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham D'Elegance RWD from the original owner, who also owned the Cadillac dealership here. It was still in the dealer's name, never titled.

It has only a little less than 11,000 miles on it. However, it has been sitting for 5 years in storage. Therefore, I am doing a lot of routine preventive maintenance.

The car has a 5.0 Liter, 3.7 V-8 Engine with an electronic Carb.

I've run several quarts of Lucas Fuel System Cleaner/Treatment through it with premium (93 octane) gasoline & it still has "smoking blow-by." However, it is NOT consuming engine oil. Nonetheless, the oil gets dark very quickly.

My mechanic says the carb. needs to be re-built. He has known the car since it was made, as he was to Service Director at the Cadillac dealership.

Yesterday, I bought a PCV Valve, a Fuel Filter & a 180 degree thermostat with a gasket & sealer kit.

Can you tell me how to locate, R&R these items?

CHECK BATTERY FIRST,THEN FUSES, THEM CHECK STARTER, JUMP START YOUR SOLENOID, see if it starts, if not check your distrbuter for Voltage, that's the easy stuff first...

You should take the car to a car shop for a check-up if you don't know what's wrong. The check engine light could mean any number of rather inocuous things, such as the failure of one of fifty various sensors that monitor engine performance, or it could be something very serious. In any event, the vehicle's computer has determined that the vehicle needs attention soon. That's what the check engine light is for; it'll go off when the problem is fixed. You don't want your car to die in the middle of a highway.

Many of the larger chain Auto parts stores, such as Advance Auto Parts or Autozone (as well as many service shops) will use a scanner to read the OBD II (On-Board Diagnostic System II) codes and interpret them free of charge. If your vehicle is somewhat older, it may use the OBD I system, and the codes can be read directly from the dashboard -- the procedure is similar for most vehicles, but check an automotive manual to be sure:

Turn the key to the on position, without starting the engine, and then back to the off position three times, and then turn it to the on position and leave it there. The 'check engine' light should blink out a series of codes. Write down the pattern of flashes and then look up the codes using the automotive service manual for your vehicle (or from an online source). Haynes and Chilton's are the most popular and available brands of service manuals. Haynes in particular publishes concise and inexpensive manuals (less than $15) for most automobiles.

Most vehicles will re-set warnings if the computer loses power for a prolonged period of time; disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a few minutes will usually cancel the fault and force the check engine light off. It will remain off for a few hundred miles, until the engine has re-established enough data to know, once again, that there is indeed something wrong. But, of course this is not recommended, as it usually deletes the stored fault codes, and will make diagnosis of the true cause difficult until the fault codes reappear.

In any case, the best solution is to have the vehicle serviced. A vehicle owner who is more concerned about a light on their dashboard than the potential damage to their vehicle that it represents may soon have need of a bicycle.

How do you replace a starter on a Cadillac Fleetwood front wheel drive Where is the starter located? Is this a difficult job I should pay someone to do or a regular joe and do this.

I can attest that it works. Using an upward motion with a slim jim ... just a few inches in from the window trim.

the fuse box shold be located on the passeger side of the car.If you look unger the dash where the protective cover is once you take that off you will see another fuse area the horn relay fuse will be a big black plug looking fuse.Make sure you check your manual to find out which fuse it is because you dont want to remove the wrong plug it might also be under the hood on the fire wall. there are 2 black boxes labeled fuses open those up and it should be labeled

This is a huge job. I suggest taking it to a garage.

As of yesterday, I discovered I have the same problem with the exact same car.

I have bypassed the heater core until I evaluate my options. (You can do that in this part of the country.)

Were you able to effect a repair without paying a Cadillac dealer to do all the work for you ?.

An independent repair shop charged me $340.89 for this work. The core was $193.26 (plus tax), the labor was 1.80 hours at $68.50/hour, plus antifreeze.

The work required is not extensive and there is nothing 'huge' about it. You access the climate control housing by detaching the panel under the passenger air-bag and removing the glove box. The heater core can then be removed from inside the car after removing the back panel from the climate control housing. I had to return the car to the shop as the heater was making a howling noise. As it turned out, there was a leak in the join (between the two panels of the climate control housing) which was rectified by applying a small section of special thick tape to the un-taped part of the join.
