William C. Durant was partnered with Josiah Dort in the Coldwater Road Cart Company (which ultimately became Durant-Dort Carriage Company). William Dort also founded the Flint Road Cart Company. However, none of these were located in Oshawa, On; they are all based in Flint, MI, USA.
William Dort would eventually create the foundation of campnays which evolved into modern day General Motors.
As for General Motors Canada and the Oshawa connection, this is a different story. Samuel McLaughlin was the founder of McLaughlin Motor Co. In 1907, William C. Durant approached McLaughin and proposed a merger. Durant would exchange 500,000$ in Buick stock for 500,000$ in McLaughlin Motor Co. stock. This officially created the McLaughlin Car Company which would eventually evolve into mordern day General Motors of Canada.
