How many red ear slider turtles can live in a 10 gallon tank and is it possible to keep one in like a plastic container or tub if so how big should it be?

Only one, and sometimes a ten gallon tank isn't enough room. The tank should be 4-5 times the turtle length wise and 3-4 times the turtle in width. If you have more then one, each turtle should get that amount of space. The water should be 1.5 times deep for instance a 7 inch turtle would have water 10 inches deep.

Can turtles speak to turtles?

Yes. Animals can communicate to each other by sonar, smell, and distinct noises they make.

Can allge eaters live with aquatic turtles?

Yes and No, if the aquarium or pond is large enough they may get along fine only crossing each others paths less than a time or two. However, just like with any other breed of aquatic turtles they each fish and technically an algae eater is a fish. You must keep in mind that the habitat should be as large as possible because any kind of animal will grow and they will need all the room they can get.

I had a red ear slider in a 20 gallon long terrarium with guppies, snails and of course a chocolate colored algae eater. That poor sucker hide under the basking perch and hardly ever came out. When summer came I removed the turtle and placed him in his new out door pond and found that when I examined the algae eater, all of his tail fin had been eattin off and all the guppies and snails had been eattin as well (that's why I put the snails and guppies in to begin with)! So if you want to take a chance and place one in with a turtle that has too small of living area, chances are that the algae eater will be eattin or he will be maimed. Good Luck, I hope that this answers your question. Oh by the way, don't place a turtle in a pond with any size goldfish and exspect them to be there any time latter, my 7-8 inch male red ear slider ate 26 medium to large size goldfish over night. Needless to say, I shall not be doing that again. He can stick with the guppies and dry pellets and lettuce that I give him.

Can ammonia build up with fish and turtles together?

Ammonia can be built up in them separately or the two together. Some species of fish produce more waste and therefore more ammonia than others, for example the goldfish. Turtles are also very wast producing and turtle tanks are often high in ammonia. All fish produce ammonia. So yes.

When it comes to sea turtles, many eggs are left on the shore. so a lot of them do hatch, but then a large amount of the baby turtles are brutally killed and eaten by vicious predators before reaching the safety of the water. That's the circle of life for you.

Does a turtles shell come off in winter?

Turtle shells are a part of a turtle's body! A shell is basically made of bones (60 meshed together) and their spine is actually embedded into its shell. Contrary to what they show in cartoons, turtles can't take of their shell any more than you can take off your skin.

What turtle is named for the color of fat under its shell?

That would be the 'Dermochelys pokemonus'. More commonly referred to as the Blastoise Turtle.

I cannot answer the question above but I can unanswer it by saying the above answer is a joke. There is no such species as pokemonus in the genus Dermochelys, except maybe in the game of Pokemon. The only living species in the genus Dermochelys is a large sea turtle often called a leatherback, Dermochelys coriacea, and it does not have a shell, but instead has a thick leathery skin resembling a shell.

What is wrong with my red ear slider if it won't stay at the bottom of the pond?

Red Ear Sliders are not "bottom walkers" so it won't stay on the bottom. They love swimming, and can get quite large so a lot of swimming space is needed. They also absolutely NEED to bask to prevent shell rot and other not so nice medical conditions, including not digesting their food and eventually death. If you are concerned about your turtle, I recommend checking out either the Turtle Forum or the Tortoise Forum (they have a small turtle section), and then deciding if it needs to go to a vet. Most reptile specialty vets will check out your pet for 20-50 dollars, plus the cost of medications and tests.
