When did the Dutch come to the Caribbean islands?
Dutch colonization in the Caribbean started in the 1634 on St. Croix and Tobago in1628, followed in 1631 with settlements on Tortuga and Sint Maarten. When the Dutch lost Sint Maarten and Anguilla where they had built a fort shortly after arriving in Sint Maarten to the Spanish, they settled Curaçao and Sint Eustatius. They regained half of Sint Maarten in 1648, from then on sharing the island with France. The border between the two portions of the island continued to be modified periodically, before being set for good in 1816.
I've spent a lot of time in St. Croix and I can tell you that Dutch history is still alive today. The US Parks Service operates the fort at Christiansted Harbor that was built to defend against pirates. It never fired a canon because it had such a strong presence, fortification and canon positions where fire could be concentrated from the straits. I love the architecture and the vibrant colors that the dutch used. They are still used today and line the streets. St. Croix is a gem and I hope to return soon!
