Tintagel village is located on the North Cornwall Coast, in the South West of the UK. The remains of Tintagel Castle are situated on top of a magnificent rocky headland, sometimes referred to as the island, and is reached on foot down a steep narrow lane which leads away from the village right down to the sea. The walk is about a mile long and the return back up the hill can be hard going for some. There is however, a Landrover service which will give you a lift for about £1 (2009). The landscape is wild and extreme and you will need a good head for heights to tackle the castle. The land surrounding Tintagel is owned by the National Trust, although the Castle itself is run by English Heritage, there is also a charge for entry with the usual repairs being carried around on the site. Tintagel Castle which is reported to be the birth place of the legendary King Arthur, was built during the 13th Century by Reginald Earl of Cornwall, where according to Cornish legends the ancient Kings of Cornwall held their court. Tintagel Castle was built for propaganda purposes and had no real strategic value, although digs done on the site have shown it was an important trade post during the Roman occupation of the UK. The castle itself is divided into two sites, one of which is located on the land side edge of the cliff, while the other is out on the headland, a linked island. Payment huts are situated at both sites. There is also a gift shop and cafe. When the tide goes out, a small sandy cove is revealed, as are a few caves, one of which is named Merlin's cave and is situated beneath the castle headland. The cove is considered relatively safe, though be aware that there is no Life Guard supervision.

Churches were built prior to medieval times. As to which was oldest, the only "records" we have about a first church are purely legendary. There are several claimants to the honor.

One in particular should be mentioned, which is the construction, prior to 60 AD, of a church in Glastonbury, Somersetshire, which is claimed to have been the first building ever built to be a church. Supposedly it was constructed by Joseph of Arimathea, who had also brought the Holy Grail, to Britain, along with a staff that was planted and became the Glastonbury Thorn. The reason this is a particularly important legend is that papal suits over it were brought at one time or another by kings of both France and Spain, and the suits ended with decisions that the church in Britain was, in fact, the first. (Ever wonder why Arthur's knights were searching for the Grail in Britain.)
