Why is my cat inconsistently using her litter box i.e. always urinates in the box - deficates in random locations around house.?

Hi there...if this is something that recently developed, first consider all the possibilities such as: - changes with litter brands - location of the litter box isn't private enough - some cats like to have one box to defecate and another to urinate - cleanliness (some cats are very finicky and prefer a super clean box) - as a general rule there should be one litter box for each cat plus one extra as a back up - kittens who are over 5-7 months can become sexually mature and urine spray as well as defecate inappropriately to mark territory. - senior cats develop age-related disorders such as chronic renal failure (CRF), hyperthyroidism, diabetes, etc. If all these have been ruled out, there's a chance that your cat may have developed another underlying medical problem such as something as simple as a lower urinary tract disorder: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_feline_lower_urinary_tract_dis.html which can contribute to accidents outside of the box. Cats will associate pain while using box and change their habits as a result. Here's an article about why cats inappropriately soil outside their litter box by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine: http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/brochures/Housesoiling.html House soiling is the most common behavior problem reported by cat owners. It includes urination and/or defecation outside the litter box, as well as urine spraying. Why do cats eliminate outside of the litter box? One common misconception is that cats soil in inappropriate places for revenge. It is tempting to conclude, "He defecated on the living room carpet to punish me for leaving him for the weekend." But this kind of calculation requires sophisticated cognitive abilities that cats aren't believed to possess. Furthermore, this conclusion assumes that cats view their urine and feces as distasteful, when in fact they do not. It is only we humans who view it that way. Medical Problems So why do cats urinate or defecate on your bed or carpet? Medical problems are one possibility. Inflammation of the urinary tract may cause painful or frequent urination, inability to urinate, bloody urine, and crying during urination. An affected cat is likely to eliminate outside the litter box if he comes to associate the box with painful urination, or if he has an increased urgency to urinate. In addition, kidney, liver, and thyroid diseases often lead to increased drinking and urination. Inflammation of the colon or rectum, intestinal tract tumors, intestinal parasites, and other gastrointestinal conditions may cause painful defecation, increased frequency or urgency to defecate, and decreased control of defecation. Age-related diseases that interfere with a cat's mobility (for example, arthritis, nervous system disorders, or muscular diseases), or with his cognitive functions can also influence his ability to get to the litter box in time. In short, any medical condition that interferes with a cat's normal elimination behavior can lead to house soiling. Litter Box Aversions Behavioral problems, such as litter box aversions, inappropriate site preferences, or urine spraying can also lead to house soiling. An aversion implies that there is something about the litter box that your cat finds unsavory. It could be the box, the litter, the location of the box, or all three. ...please consider visiting the website for further details

How do you stop a cat scratching furniture?

Ok, here is a couple of ways:

1. If your cat has a scratch post, try not to place it near furniture.

2.On the scratch post, spray catnip on it. (Catnip spray can be bought from pets at home) This will make the cat want to scratch the post more than furniture.

3.Every time the cat scratches furniture, spray him with a bottle of water. Eventually, he will learn that scratching furniture is bad.

NONE! Please spay your cat! There are way too many kittens that are put to sleep in shelters each year!

Actually, if your thinking PHYSICALLY, which you probably are, a cat should only have one litter a year because it takes a while for her body to recover enough to have another litter. Although she can probably have two litters without hurting herself too much.

You can discourage a cat from climbing walls by providing them with designated climbing areas such as cat trees or shelves, using deterrents like double-sided tape or aluminum foil on the walls, and ensuring they have enough mental and physical stimulation to keep them engaged. Redirecting their behavior with interactive toys and regular play sessions can also help.

Why do cats bite other cats on the neck?

Dogs will bite one another for a variety of reasons. It could be aggression triggered by possessiveness over a toy, food, space, or other object of value. Aggression can also be triggered by fear, a clash of dominate personalities, or a disagreement over position in the "pack." Aggression between dogs of the same gender is common. However, biting doesn't always mean aggression. Dogs will often mouth or bite one another in play, just like kids will grab or tackle one another. As longs as the dogs aren't hurting one another, it is nothing to worry about. If they are, find out what is triggering the biting and contact a dog trainer or behaviorist.

Why do cats enjoy being scratched so much?

Cats like being scratched so much because it feels good! Makaela Answer I heard various things about this. For indoor cats, it's because it's quite warm/cool indoors, so they don't need all that undercoat. So they constantly shed (although fluctuates shedding depending on the season). Your hand cratching helps them shed those undercoats better than if they were in wild running and scratching against woods and stuff. As for outer cats, I heard it's because they pick up various things in their fur and it makes them itch. So they like being scratched. I've never scratched an outdoor cat in fear that I may transfer something to my indoor cats, so I don't know.

What is paw preference?

Paw preference, also known as pawedness, refers to the tendency of animals, such as cats and dogs, to favor one paw over the other for tasks like reaching, batting, or grasping objects. Just like humans can be right- or left-handed, animals can exhibit paw preference as well.

How do I know if my cat is going blind?

A good way to tell if you puppy is blind, is to simply watch them. You will notice that they will often come very close to running into things, or actually run into them. You can also wave your hand in front of their face to see if they respond to it, or turn on a lamp of some kind to see if you get any kind of reaction. The most logical of course would be to look at the eyes themselves. They might be glazed over, like my new Maltese puppy Brodie. They might also have some kind of film on the eyes, or a discharge out of the eyes. If any of this sounds like your dog, I would suggest taking him to the vet immediately, because some things can be fixed(not likely, but possible).

Additional Info:

Our vet just confirmed that our 3.5 month old schnauzer puppy has gone blind. The first sign we noticed was his walking into table legs and furniture, walls, doors, etc. But we were in denial and thought he was just klutzy. He also started falling off the edge of the top step, but we thought he didn't understand what stairs were. In the street, he would ignore other dogs and people - - it never occurred to us that he didn't know they were there. Finally, we played ball with him and he pounced on a bouncing ball. But, after the ball had rolled away, he continued to pounce on where the ball had been when it last made a noise by bouncing. That's when we finally decided to take him to the vet. My suggestion if you are not sure: throw something into his face that will not hurt him - - something big, but very light and with no sharp edges (e.g. balled up newspaper). If the dog makes no attempt to get out of the way until it hits him, then you need to take that dog to the vet. Repeat it a few times if you must to convince yourself.

Your cat is pregnant or is it worms?

I'm looking for an answer to this question, too. I've taken in a female cat and she does indeed have tapeworms, but she also hasn't gone into heat since I started feeding her outside in December. She used to come around all the time crying to my indoor male cats, so that's how I know. We haven't gotten her dewormed yet, as we don't know if the deworming treatments could harm the kittens. Her belly is firm, and I can't feel any lumps in it. She only has three nipples that MIGHT be ready for kittens, but they aren't engorged at all, just a little crusty and longer.

If anyone could help WITHOUT saying "Go to the vet," I'd appreciate it.

Can you spay a nursing cat?

Ideally, you should wait until the kittens are weaned. Kittens knead the breasts, and that can be painful or prevent healing if the cat is spayed. Also, there is a somewhat greater risk of infection and increased bleeding since she has so recently given birth. As the kittens are weaned, her organs will shrink and make spaying less complicated. That said, keep in mind that, like humans, cats are more likely to get pregnant soon after giving birth. You want to spay her before she gets pregnant again, so if there's a reason you are considering having her spayed while she's nursing, discuss it with your veterinarian. As a humane volunteer, I have seen cats get spayed within a week of giving birth and continue to nurse. The milk does dry quickly, so the kittens may need to be supplemented. Not all veterinarians have the training or skill needed to perform this somewhat complicated surgery, which is why it is important to go with what your veterinarian advises.

Where do cats sleep?

It's normal for cats to hide. They do hide well too and could be within two feet of you, but you don't see them.

Cats graze with their food and to some degree are solitary animals and enjoy being alone even though they may be friendly, cuddle and play with their owners. Cats also don't take well to change. Example: having some work done on your kitchen and everything is upside down. Other cats may be very curious and actually in the way.

If your cat is frightened and hides away even from you then take time out every single day to hold your cat, but just for a few seconds and let them know you will release them without a struggle if they so choose to get away from you. Eventually they will enjoy the human contact. When they are around you talk to them. Cats are highly intelligent animals.

Cats are individuals like people and some cats will be curious, open and friendly and want to see who the guests are in your home or what is going on, while other cats scurry away to a safe place. This does not mean there is anything wrong with your cat.

Will a fat cat stay warmer then a skinny cat?

Probably depends on the cat's metabolism. Generally, one that is more lean will have a faster metabolism and will stay warm. However, also depends on how much and the length of fur the cat has, and lean body mass.

Do spayed female cats spray?

YES! They can and they do - I can testify firsthand that I have seen a female cat spray. Sometimes they will do it if they are mad about something, or they will do it to mark their territory. However, spaying a cat before she reaches sexual maturity will greatly reduce the risk of the cat ever spraying. If the cat sprayed regularly before spaying, then this may become habit.

Do male cats have multiple nipples?

Yes, male cats have nipples just like female cats. They typically have 6-8 nipples, but this can vary among individuals. These nipples are remnants from when all cats, both male and female, develop in the womb initially as females.

How do you stop an indoor female cat from stalking another indoor male cat they are neutered and spayed?

You can try providing more environmental enrichment to keep the female cat occupied and mentally stimulated. Offer separate feeding stations, hiding spots, and vertical space for each cat. Additionally, consider using pheromone diffusers or sprays to help reduce their stress levels and modify their behavior.
