User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Anything can be harmful if not given in proper amounts... however, Cayenne Pepper is actually beneficial to dogs when administered properly. Perhaps the greatest natural stimulant known, Cayenne has been called the single greatest "driver" of other herbs. No other herb is quite in this class making it a must for all formulas. Simply said, when you need to get an herb to any location in the body cayenne reins supreme. The uses of cayenne are so numerous that it has been claimed "the single greatest herb." Some of the common uses are anal problems (to include hemorrhoids), heart attack, toothache, external bleeding, diphtheria, all sorts of eye conditions, wounds of all types, clearing the mucous membranes etc. Cayenne pepper is derived from the fruit berry of Capsicum annum, a tropical shrub. In folk medicine, it has been used for fevers, sore throats, respiratory infections, asthma, and digestive disturbances. Recent studies however, have shown that it can reduce the risk of developing arteriosclerosis by lowering blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Regions of the world where cayenne pepper is consumed regularly have shown much less incidence of cardiovascular disease. Additionally, one of its active ingredients, capsaicin, is effective in reducing pain (such as in arthritis) by acting as both an anti-inflammatory and a nerve blocking agent. Drink some milk. That is why they have that white stuff next to the salsa in Mexican restaurants, to counteract the spice. Yeah, water can actually make it worse.

ANSWER:If you use too much cayenne pepper in a dish, there is no real good way to diminish the heat. You can do one of two things. You can toss the dish in the trash if its too hot, or make another identical amount with no peppers in it and combine the two. This will lessen the pepper amount by half. ANSWER:Here in Louisiana we use lemon juice to counter an accidental "dumping" of too much cayenne (even though it's rare we could ever have too much!) If the sourness of the lemon is evident in what you are cooking, add a small amount of sugar to offset it. The trick is to add and taste as you go. I've also heard that lime juice will work, though I've never tried that myself.
Try putting either Lemon Juice in, or serve with Lemon cut into quarters to use to offset the pepper flavor.

Just tried this myself, as I have a too hot Chicken Chaussere Sauce (Coleman's Packet Mix) with too much pepper in the ingredients. It works! You'll need to add some sugar to counteract the sourness of the lemon, etc., but it does work.

When you have a hot Indian Curry from a restaurant, they often add 1/2 a proper lemon. This is to squeeze onto your curry and mix in to neutralize if too hot.

Does cayenne pepper keep cats away?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, but it might not work. For dogs, try using vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the perimeter and between the rows and no more unwanted visitors. Their sense of smell is too sensitive and they will vacate the area. Repeat after rains as necessary. For cats, they should only mess with your plants if they need to, either there is something in the plant that they need and you are not giving them, or if they are trapped inside and starving. But if you really want to keep cats away, try spraying ammonia on the plant. This might attract the dogs though. Cats avoid their own urine.

Will cayenne pepper hurt plants?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, not if you put it on it. Make sure that it doesn't get into its water supply. Then your plant will die. If you are trying to get squirrels away from your plant, its best to put cayenne pepper in front of your plants or a little on your plants. Remember, it does rain.

You can't swing a dead dog in Korea without bumping into cayenne pepper...they just call it red pepper...what N. Americans call a red pepper is a paprika in Korea...However, having come back to Canada from Korea last year, I get my "red pepper" from a Korean supermarket because I swear it is redder in colour (looks nicer) and tastes better...go figure.
