Can you copy a DVD rom disc?

First, take note that copying a DVD may break certain copyright laws depending on country and your use of the copy.

Keep in mind that a number of movies are placed on dual-layer discs or DVD-9s that may only be copied by utilizing a dual-layer recordable drive. If you want to fit the DVD on a single-layer recordable DVD, this may be done with certain copying software that will recompress the material but don't expect that the quality of the video will be the same.

By just copying the files from a DVD to a recordable DVD disc, you will probably end up with a disc that will not play on a regular DVD player. This is because the files must be set in a particular order and in particular areas on the disc. There is some DVD writing software that can accomplish this task but there is software that can not. So do not expect that you can simply copy the .VOB and .IFO files.

There are a number of programs available that utilize a single recordable DVD drive in order to copy a whole disc. For a step-by-step guide on how to copy 1:1 DVD to a blank DVDR click here.

If you are interested in just copying the audio of a DVD disc read on:

Another option you may use is connecting an audio recorder to the audio output of a DVD player.

What about extracting video?

There are software utilities which may not only extract audio but also video from a disc in order to create a new disc. Another option is to connect your DVD player to a DVD video recorder, but you may encounter problems with this alternative in cases where the recorder detects signals from the DVD player which may stop it from recording. Still, there are also types of DVD Authoring Software which can primarily import video from DVD discs which are unprotected.

What is the best blank DVD?

Best Blank DVDMost people say that Taiyo Yuden blanks are the very best as long as you don't buy the "economy" version. I've had great success with the higher-end Verbatim DVD-R as well.

Taiyo Yuden used to be the industry standard but since they have been taken over by JVC, their quality is terrible. I used to be able to burn 8X rated TY DVD-R discs at 16X and get an overall quality score of 99.2 to 99.3 with DVD Info Pro. I just opened my first spindle of the JVC-Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs. The first thing I noticed is that the media will not allow burning at a speed greater than 12X. Then I tried burning the same disk 3 times, once at 12X, 8X and 4X. The quality score of all three DVDs was 96 or less (marginal to poor). Until JVC butts out and lets Taiyo Yuden do what they do best, I'll be switching to Verbatim as that is the only other brand I have had good luck with of late.

By the way, these are the 'premium' blanks, not the value line...

Do I use a CD or a DVD to store photos?

It depends primarily on how many pictures you intend to store on a single disc, the size of those pictures and where they will be viewed. Choosing one of the other will have no impact on the final quality of the pictures.

While a DVD will hold several times the number of pictures of a CD, CD's can still hold a fair number of pictures. If you can fit all of the pictures you need onto a single CD, you are a little better off going with the CD. The reason is that most DVD players and DVD drives will read a CD, yet CD players and CD drives will not read a DVD. If you are sharing these pictures with someone that may only have a CD drive and not a DVD drive, the CD will give you greater compatibility.

If you have too many pictures to fit on a single CD, you would still be okay sharing a DVD in most circumstances. Almost all drives installed in new computers over the past 7-10 years have been DVD drives.

I think the DVD is better than CD, becaus of the better quality and bigger capacity...so if you want to burn more pictures onto a CD or DVD, you had better choose the DVD disc, hope these informs can help you.

On a CD is data written in concentric circles or a continuous spiral track?

Based on my knowledge and some research, I say spiral track. I say that since a CD drive uses a laser to read data (that's what I thought and people told me), if it went in concentric circles, then the laser would have to quickly turn off then turn on as it skipped to the next circle. To keep the data flowing to the processor (or wherever it goes, I'm just using logic), it would have to write data on a CD in a spiral track as the laser moved inward to read the data. To me, that's the most logical answer.

YES

That should be "NO". You can check if your drive is a dual layer burner by looking at the symbols on the side of the Drive. If a drive is able to burn Dvd-9 (Duel Layer DVD), it will have R or RW with a 'DL' after it.

I followed the previous answer and found out my drive could not write the discs correctly.
