It is easiest to put in the middle of the sliding seat that can be slid from the rear to the middle of the van. It is also prefferable to have that seat in the middle with the middle seat removed. If you are using the side shoulder harness belts you need to pull them all the way out and retract them slowly. They should click. Once the belt is properly positioned per the seat manufacturers instructions make sure it is level and bucled in tight. You could also take the vehicle to a local police or fire department to have your installation inspected before use.

Seat belts were not all that popular until the late 50's to mid 60's. Car manufacturers were resistant to the added cost of providing anchors and belts and customers didn't necessarily use them when the seat belts were available, so the offering of seat belts as an option went through fits and starts. By 1965, all states had laws requiring only front seat lap belts, so there likely would not have been any standard way to secure a child car seat much earlier than that. I remember my parents insisting the dealer install front and rear lap belts in our '57 Chevy. When we were driving places, my baby brother was either in a basinette or held in someone's arms.
