How can i tell a male molli from a female mollie?
This question keeps cropping up for some reason, somebody needs to condense them all into one question.
A molly is a live-breeder, and all live-bearing fish of family Poecilidae(guppies, mollies, platies and sword-tails) are very easy to sex. The female is generally rounder than the male even when she is not pregnant.
Look at the underside of the fish. About two-thirds of the way along its body (towards the tail) will be two small fins called the pectoral fins. Slightly behind them is the anal opening, and behind that is another fin. When the fish relaxes and hangs in the water it can be sexed by means of that fin. If the fish is female, when she is relaxed, the fin will hang down in a triangle with the point down-most. All females have this fanned fin, but when it is tucked up it can look quite like a male's.
The male's fin is straight, fairly long and points directly backwards. This modified anal fin is called a gonopodium. It is not a fin but a penis-like organ that is used to fertilize the female.
This makes it a whole lot easier to breed the fish and not have to spend a lot.
Here is how to breed your mollies.
-Buy a small isolation tank from pet-co(pets mart is way more expensive) It only needs to be a small, vented box that should submerse itself and fill up with water with the lid level to the surface. This way, there is no need to buy a separate tank.
-Find a male and female mollie and put them both into the isolation box together.
-They might feel a little bit stressed out after being caught so give the two of them a little pinch of food to calm them down.
-Now you sit tight and wait until, well, you could say they make love I guess.
-The male has done his job so you can let him out of the isolation tank.
-Let the female aout of the isolation tank about nintey minutes a day but keep her in until you get a little mollie!
That's about it! you can reuse the tank for breeding or kind of a timeout boxx for those aggressive fish.
Thanks forletting us tell you about this. Its really cool because you don't need to buy new fish
Thanks!
What do you do if stagnant water has made the pool smell really bad?
If you can't, or don't want to drain the pool, just 'shock' it and get all the other water balance numbers right (pH, conditioner etc) and then filter it continuously until its OK. (Backflush filter often). Best to take a sample of water to your local pool store and buy whatever chemicals you need. Convert to a salt-water system if you want perfect water all the time, automatically.
I can recommend "POND CLEAR", a powder that is mixed with water according to the instructions on the bottle. There are many other products on the market also to choose from. I regularly use it in one of my small 'still' ponds. It works really well and is absolutely safe for any pond fish. It is a soluble powder concentrate algaecide for a broad spectrum of algae in fish ponds. It is quite expensive but it goes a very long way - the 150gram bottle will clean and clear up to 18 000 litres.
BUT = for a little extra money you could buy a small pump to iliminate your problem.
