How do you design a sign foundation?

1. Define the frontal area of the sign

2. Wind Pressure (lb/sf) = 0.013 x (wind speed mph x 0.45)^2

3. Multiply the frontal area of the sign by wind speed to find the horizontal force (in pounds) concentrated at a point defined by the centroid of the area defined in step 1.

4. With known soil properties, use the maximum stress method developed by Broms or Rutledge. The equation used will vary depending if your soil is granular or cohesive.

What are the materials used in building a gravity dam?

There are many gravity dams constructed of compacted earth. High dams are generally concrete. All dams require a spillway to be safe. The spillway must be armored.

The pH scale is a measurement system that indicates the concentration of these in a solution?

The pH scale is a measurement system that indicates the concentration of Hydrogen ions also called Protons.

Difference between opc and ppc?

Ordinary Portland Cement, also known as OPC, is a type I cement that does not only harden, but also becomes water-resistant once it cures. Pozzolanic Portland Cement, or PPC, is a type IV cement that includes a mixture of a pozzuolanic material, which can increase the strength of the concrete and reduce the amount of OPC used.

How much do air force engineers make is their salary comparable to civilian engineers?

They make about $30.00-$50.00 an hour. answer Engineers serving in the US Air Force are paid according to their rank. The US Air Force has a job classification of Aerospace Engineer for officers. This classification has nothing to do with pay. Payment is according to your rank.

What is the difference between digital terrain model and digital elevation model?

DTM = Digital Terrain Model is a digital representation of the sloped contour surface of the earth. Surface features, such as man-made objects and vegetation, are not included.

DEM = Digital Elevation Model is a digital representation of the sloped contour surface of the earth. Elevation data is included, along with surface features such as man-made objects and vegetation.

What are the disadvantages of aluminum over steel as a reinforcement bar?

They are too numerous to mention!

Steel embedded in concrete is protected from corrosion by the high alkali content of concrete. New concrete is 13-13.2 pH when poured. The chemical reaction that takes place between the concrete and steel forms what is called a 'Passivating Layer' on the steel. This layer, kept intact will prevent rust from occurring on the steel. Google, passivating layer and read.

It is very important to keep this high pH during a concrete structures life. One way this is done is to waterproof the concrete.

Aluminum doesn't share this characteristic and corrodes quite easily when placed in concrete. This why, if an Aluminum railing post is to be embedded in a concrete a core is extracted, an appropriate filler material is placed in the hole, then the Aluminum is inserted. Filler materials [usually an epoxy] isolate the Aluminum from contact with the concrete and also prevent electrical currents from flowing.

If aluminum is IN the concrete, Dissimilar metal corrosion begins day one between steel and aluminum. In short order the aluminum will be a powder. Steel cost less, easier to work with and can be welded conventionally on site.

Why should aggregates be well graded?

Aggregates must be well graded in order not to have a gap that may cause a weak point and that is necessary for :

1-Asphalt mixes

2-concrete mixes

3-Road material.

What is the bridge now found in Arizona?

Can a theodolite measure distances?

Yes, but it is an indirect process requiring two operators- or at least a fixed surveying target on which the surveyor aligns his Stadia wires ( popularily Cross hairs) There are different scales but a base-line of l00 feet and in some cases l00 power is increasingly standard. consulting a table and some number-juggling is needed to get the distance, and more importantly the Vertical rise and Fall ( gradient, up or down) The theodolite is better adapted to this type of surveying, than a mere ( range finder)- which is can be used for- but with some shifting of tactics and technique. The basic tables in the technical manuals assume a base line distance of l00 feet, then there are angles, etc.
