Cold and Flu

Questions and answers about the "Common Cold"; symptoms in the upper respiratory tract like sneezing, scratchy throat, and runny nose, but adults don't typically have fevers. Colds are usually caused by the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold. Also questions about the seasonal flu, also called "regular flu", caused mostly by Type A and Type B Influenza viruses. Flu starts with similar symptoms as a cold only it hits faster and harder and usually includes fever in adults. Although the "stomach flu" is a common term, it is not a real diagnosis. The proper medical term for stomach flu is gastroenteritis (an intestinal disease, sometimes viral but also bacterial), it is often mistaken for influenza because the flu can sometimes include vomiting and diarrhea.

A difference between the flu virus and pnumonia is?

Flu virus is a primitive non-living sub-microscopic infectious organism that causes respiratory disease in mammals. Pneumonia is a clinical disease - an infection of the lungs that can be caused by damage to the lung tissue by environmental contaminants such as smoke or other chemical irritants and a number of different micro-organisms. Some forms are caused by viruses, for example in viral pneumonia, but most commonly pneumonia is caused by bacteria that are living microscopic organisms that also can produce disease in mammals. Fungi can also cause pneumonia. Both the flu and pneumonia are diseases of the respiratory system, but are caused by different "germs" and/or pollutants. This means that it usually takes different drugs to treat the two kinds of infections, although symptoms can be very similar in humans.

Have had a bad cough for months how to get rid of it?

Any cough lasting longer than two weeks should be investigated by a physician.

Can you mix Chinese medicine and Western cough mixture for cough?

Generally ,Chinese medicine is herbal and the Western cough medicine is not. Herbs interact with other ingredients and by mixing the two you could get a bad reaction. I wouldn't mix them. Use one or the other, but not together. Some herbs double of effects of things like aspirin or other ingredients that could be found in the cough medicine.

Can you reuse disposable face masks?

No. Not if they are made to be disposable. Use only once and then throw away, they are not effective after they get moist from respirations, so they are good for only short term use and only for one time.

See the related question below for more information about using face masks for protection from the flu.

Does the influenza A H1N1 virus attack healthy cells to give the person the flu?

Viruses do not select which cells to attack that way and while one might believe that it may be easier for a virion to attack a "sick" cell, it may actually be more difficult if the cell wall or membrane are affected by the disease affecting the cell in a way that the virus can no longer properly attach to it. Viruses do attach to healthy cells and may also attach to diseased cells. Since a virus is using the host cells to do the work of its reproduction, they need cells capable of doing that. Some diseased cells, such as cancerous cells might be especially good at that job since they have the ability for rapid cell development due to the cancer itself, but other diseased cells may be incapable of accepting and incorporating the genetic materials needed for generating the virions. It is a matter of the virus finding a proper fit between the proteins on their shells (capsid) and the cell membranes. (See the related questions below about the lytic process of virus replication).

Healthy individuals can and do develop immunity to viruses by use of vaccines, a fact long proven in human trials of flu vaccines over decades of use. (See also the related questions below about how vaccines work).

You bet, it would be like a sling shot. It would sling through the air like piece of shot and cause a lot of damage even at 30. Hope that helps some!

Is there sulpha in a flu vaccine?

Assuming you mean sulfa, there are traces in some types of flu vaccines in the form of sulfonamides, such as neosporin, gentamicin, and polymixin. If you are allergic to these, you should not take the vaccines that contain these ingredients.

Two of the vaccines are available without these drugs: Fluzone and Flulaval. Ask your physician if these would be safe for you to use.

The ingredients of each type of flu vaccine currently available in the US for the 2012 - 2013 flu season are:

Flulaval:

Thimerosal, α-tocopheryl hydrogen succinate, polysorbate 80, formaldehyde, sodium deoxycholate, ovalbumin

Fluzone: Standard, High-Dose, & Intradermal:

Formaldehyde, octylphenol ethoxylate (Triton X-100), sodium phosphate, gelatin (standard formulation only), thimerosal (multi-dose vial only) , egg protein

Afluria:

Beta-propiolactone, thimerosol (multi-dose vials only), monobasic sodium phosphate, dibasic sodium phosphate, monobasic potassium phosphate, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, sodium taurodeoxycholate, neomycin sulfate, polymyxin B, egg protein

Fluarix:

Sodium deoxycholate, formaldehyde, octoxynol-10 (Triton X-100), α-tocopheryl hydrogen succinate, polysorbate 80 (Tween 80), hydrocortisone, gentamicin sulfate, ovalbumin

Fluvirin:

Nonylphenol ethoxylate, thimerosal (multidose vial-trace only in prefilled syringe), polymyxin, neomycin, beta-propiolactone, egg protein

FluMist and FluMist Quadrivalent:

Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), monosodium glutamate, hydrolyzed porcine gelatin, arginine, sucrose, dibasic potassium phosphate, monobasic potassium phosphate, gentamicin sulfate, egg protein

Why has my nose been runny for a month?

== == == == Typically a cold or flu will be gone in 7 to 10 days, so if it has been runny for a month, there could be some other problem involved such as an allergy, irritation (e.g., from pollution or pollen), or even a sinus infection.

If you don't have a fever and if the drainage is clear, there are some over the counter remedies you might try, such as antihistamines, which may work to relieve the symptoms if the problem is allergies. If you know that there is a lot of pollen dust or other particles in the air, irritation by those could be causing the runny nose and then you might try a nasal saline spray. This just works to clear the sinuses and nose of those particles. The spray bottles are convenient, it feels soothing on your nasal tissues and is easy to use just following the label directions.

Another way to clear your nose and sinuses is with the use of a Neti Pot. These act in the same way as a saline nasal spray but allow an irrigation with more liquids (and some come with packets of medication to mix in the water). Anyone that I have known who has used one says they wish they had known about them sooner.

But if you have an infection, you should seek medical advice and treatment. Indications of infection include fever, thickened and yellow nasal drainage, sinus discomfort, and persistent or severe headaches. If I had an infection, or symptoms that didn't improve with the use of the over the counter remedies for several days, then I would go to my doctor to get advice from him. There are some very affective prescription medications a medical professional can prescribe.

Is the flu fatal to pregnant women?

Answer: There are many different types of flu, some more serious than others. Most are not typically fatal to pregnant women.

Pregnant women do have extra strains on their immune systems which can make it more difficult for them to fight off some types of infectious diseases. This is one reason that vaccinations are encouraged to prevent the flu in pregnant women. However, with proper care to prevent secondary bacterial infections and to control fever and dehydration, most seasonal flu does not impact pregnant women much more than non-pregnant women.

That said, during the pandemic of 2009, the A-H1n1/09 influenza has shown that pregnant women are more at risk for contracting the flu and for complications and fatality than other demographic groups. Obstetricians are encouraging priority vaccinations for their pregnant or soon-to-be-pregnant patients.

What causes cold sensitivity?

Often, a person cracks a tooth. Cold and sugar are two items that can cause some surprising pain, as the crack leads down to the root (nerve endings) of the tooth.

Normal teeth can be sensitive to cold, as well. My teeth, for instance, are all very healthy, yet if I go for a walk on a cold, cold day and breath through my mouth, my teeth will invariably ache later, worse, and worse, until I have to take an Ibuprofin. Owie.

What is the word origin of the word influenza?

The word Influenza comes from the Italian language meaning "influence" and refers to the cause of the disease; initially, this ascribed illness to unfavorable astrological influences.[161] Changes in medical thought led to its modification to influenza del freddo, meaning "influence of the cold". Does wearing a surgical mask protect other people from your cold or flu?

I believe that the holes in the surgical masks are too large relative from the bacteria or virus and cannot fully keep the cold from spreading or keep the cold away from you. The only way that a masks keeps the cold from spreading is when the bacteria hit the fabric and don't go through the holes.

What is a chest cold?

If you mean chest cold, it means you have heavy wheezing that cause some chest pains. If you are indeed asking about a cold chest, it is a very discomforting feeling in the chest or torso area. The chest feels like it is freezing even though one may be well covered, or with an electrical blanket on the chest. Opinions and input from other FAQ Farmers: * I get it often, and so far my own doctor can not explain what it is. * I also get a cold chest and again my doctor knows nothing about it. * I have had a cold chest for about 6 months now and once again my doctor knows nothing about it. He says it must be caused by sweating but this is not the case. It can be worrying so if anybody gets any answers I would be interested. * I went to the doctor, I ran some tests. Bloodwork (came out fine), Echocardiogram (All fine), and a stress test (the one where you run on a treadmill with all those probes attached to you; again all fine.) She agreed with me that it's all caused by stress and I need to cut down my stress level. Since I went to the doctor and found out that nothing is seriously wrong with me I've been much more relaxed knowing that I'm not going to have a heart attack or something and I haven't had a reoccurance of the cold feeling. Try de-stressing a little. It worked for me. *shrug* She also agreed with me that it was directly linked to my caffeine intake. I've stopped drinking caffinated beverages and I haven't had any cold feeling.
