What sport used the term home run long before baseball?

Contrary to some suggestions, the answer here is not cricket. The term "home run" is never used in cricket, and the Oxford English Dictionary states that the only use of the term outside of Baseball is as a synonym of "home stretch".

Why is the distance from homeplate to the pitcher's mound the same for a league of 15 to 17-year-olds as it is in MLB?

Homeplate DistanceI remember making the leap to the larger field and at first it feels pretty big, but basically at the age of 15 the kids generally do outgrow the Little League fields, catchers CAN make the throw to second and the shortstops and third basemen can make the throw to first. By this point, most of the kids who are still playing are interested baseball players so the pool of talent is much lower but the overall level of talent is much higher. Chances are a 15 year old kid playing on the larger field has played since he was six.

Also 14 year old pitcher regularly throw over 55 mph which on a Little League Field is VERY fast

He is right. At age 14, from a little league distance it would be very dangerous. (They actually have two different distances, high school is the same distance but Seniors isn't.)

The hitters are also better in the bigs.

Like for me, at 13 years old I throw 72, from a little league distance that could injure a kid.

At 13 I was 4-10 80lbs., but some friends were 6-4 255, poney league bases were 75' This was a lot of fun!

Where is a competitive summer baseball league in Pittsburgh PA for a 19-year-old looking for serious college players?

I know there use to be a league in western Pennsylvania called the Erie Shores, but I think 2007 may have been the last summer of that league. I know a friend of mine that plays collegiate baseball is playing with a team from Washington Pa but I am not quite sure what the name of the league is. I actually play in the ACBL which is in eastern PA and NY.

Does the defending baseball national champion get an automatic berth to the NCAA baseball regionals?

They are not guaranteed an automatic berth. They must either win their conference tournament championship or have a win/loss record that is enough for an at-large bid.

Why do college players have one or two pieces of tape wrapped around the lower barrel of the bat?

I play division 1 baseball and I know many umpires make the tape mandatory because pine tar is sometimes used on the bats and can only be used so far up the bat. The tape is measured to that maximum height as a guide to enforce this rule I also play Division 1 baseball and the tape is used for pine tar limitations, but most players do that just for the look. It's just one of those trends in baseball that goes on and on. Some people have one strip and others could have multiple strips. It's more of a trend than a need.
