Most color blindness is caused by an inherited genetic defect where the functioning of the color receptive cones in the retina is deficient - or where the cones are absent altogether. It is most commonly inherited from mutations on the X chromosome. There are different genetic defects that cause different types of color blindness. Some manifest at birth, while others are progressive, i.e. persons with some defects gradually lose their ability to distinguish some or all colors. Because males have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome while females have two X chromosomes, males are at greater risk for having color blindness. If a woman inherits a normal X chromosome in addition to the one that carries the mutation, she will not display the mutation. Men do not have a second X chromosome to override the chromosome that carries the mutation.

I actually am color blind. And I found out that I was color blind a long time ago when I looked in a book. There was a color blind test on one of the pages. It looked like a whiligig that to people that aren't color blind would say that there are red dots making up the picture. All that I saw was a picture made up of dots, but no color. I always thought that your eyes weren't supposed to see colors. Now I know that I am color blind.
