Upper case letters are letters which are in capital format. You can define upper case letters by saying big letters.

You can switch to upper case letters by holding shift and/or typing letters while caps lock key on.

Lower case letters are letters which are not capital and can be defined by not applying Shift.

Laptop keyboards are usually something of a compromise; to squeeze all the required functionality into the laptop case, some keys are given extra functions - and a special function key (often labelled Fn) used to access the extra functions. The other principle advantage is that a laptop keyboard is expensive and difficult to repair, if you damage the external keyboard then it's easily replaced.
