What is the best free statistical software available for social science?

There is no "best" package, it really depends on what you need to do, who you need to collaborate with and what your personal preferences are.

Among the free options, one increasingly popular choice is the package "R". R is related to the commercial package S-Plus. R can be a challenge to learn, particularly because it is driven by a command-line interface (although graphical interfaces are available, for example "R Commander"). If you take the time to go through a couple of tutorials, you will be able to do most basic (and many not so basic) types of analysis fairly quickly (less if you already know a programming language); I would recommend working through the short book by Venebles et. al. ("An Introduction to R", available as a free pdf from R-Project.org). There are many add on packages that help with analysis of social science data (that is panel and cross-sectional data). R is widely used by statisticians, and it is starting to displace SAS/Stata/SPSS in the social sciences to a limited extent, particularly in economics and psychology. R is a good choice if you intend to interact with statisticians, if you need to write custom routines, if you like to program, if you want support from a large and dynamic user community or if you need to do very high-end statistics.

However, R may not be the best choice for many people, and you have to consider whether you are willing to invest time to learn to use it and if you are willing to endure a steep learning curve.

Also, R is known for having difficulties with very large datasets (more than a few million rows). There are ways to work around this, but they are highly technical. Of course, this isn't an issue for most users.

If you just need to do some basic stats with minimal frustration, you might consider looking at some alternatives, especially PSPP. PSPP is a freeware clone of SPSS. Since most features are available using the user interface (e.g. menus, checkboxes, buttons,...), the software does not have the steep learning curve that R has, so you can be up and running very quickly. PSPP is not as extensible as R, and you do not have quite as much control over the particulars of the analysis you run (at least not via the GUI, but you can write scripts, and PSPP can run scripts written for SPSS). If you need to work with people who use SPSS or if you prefer to use a GUI, you might try PSPP first. Also, PSPP handles very large datasets fairly well, so if you need to process datasets with tens of millions of rows or more, this may be the only freeware choice. A major limitation is that PSPP does not do a great job of handling panel data, which is why it is not very widely used by economists and some other social scientists.

Another option is a package called Vista. It's mainly a statistical visualization package. It is menu driven and is somewhat like JMP (a SAS product) and Tableau, although the visualizations and interface aren't as refined. You may to want download Vista and give it a try.

Most analysts have more than one package in their toolchest, so keep in mind that learning one package does not prevent you from learning a second package later if the need arises. There are other freeware packages out there, but R and PSPP are the most common, and have the largest user support groups.

I have the pleasure to brief on our Data Visualization software "Trend Compass".

TC is a new concept in viewing statistics and trends in an animated way by displaying 5 axis (X, Y, Time, Bubble size & Bubble color) instead of just the traditional X and Y axis. It could be used in analysis, research, presentation etc. In the banking sector, we have Deutsche Bank New York as our client.

Types of programes?

I don't know how anyone could possibly work out how many programs there are. Don't forget, it's not just New Zealand, it's the whole world. What you'd have to (this would be quite unlikely to do) is travel to all the different countries and look in each different T.V guide and then you can add all the programs from the different countries up but nobody yet knows how many programs there are.

The text on internet sites is too small how do you fix this?

Depending on what web browser you are using, the solution might be slightly different; it would be great if you could please give us more details.

But generally:

On Windows OS, there are a few shortcut keys for this. They are:

  • Ctrl + (Control and Plus keys) -- this will zoom-in.
  • Ctrl - (Control and Minute keys) -- this will zoom-out.
  • Ctrl 0 (Control and Zero keys) -- this will reset or switch back to default zoom.
  • Hold down "Ctrl" key and scroll the mouse--up is zoom in, and down is zoom out.

Then on each different web browser, there are other settings:

On Internet Explorer:

  • On the Commands Bar, go to: Page ---> Text Size
  • Note: You might need to check the "Ignore Font Sizes" option in Tool ---> Internet Options ---> Accessibility

On Mozilla Firefox:

  • On the Menu Bar, go to: Tools ---> Options ---> Contents tab

On Google Chrome:

  • On the Navigation Bar, click on the wrench icon (Tools)
  • go to Options ---> Under the Hood tab ---> under Web Contents

What does it mean when you sign up for antivirus and it says 'its a excutable file and may contain virus's?

The message about executable files applies to any install file. This is to protect you and let you know that if you choose to install the file you could run the risk of there being a virus in the file. If there is anything suspicious about the file or the source of the file, do not install it.

Why can't I delete viruses in my computer even after I press delete?

Most viruses are embedded in various files (such as images and programs) and when you open those files, the virus, which is actually a program embedded within the file is executed and create files on your computer which cause various problems (the problems are very specific to what type of virus you get). So deleting the file in which the virus was embedded will not remove the virus. The files created by the virus are often created in "secure" locations on your hard-drive, locations which are responsible for maintaining your operating system (Windows) and can not be deleted by hand (unless you have admin rights for your user). Here is where Anti Virus software comes in. This type of software have the ability to remove viruses from these locations, and if they cant, they "quarantine" them (shield them, making them unable to do harm).

How do you turn off mouse lag on a Gateway?

If the pointer is moving a fraction after you move the mouse then the answer may be a trojan/virus in your system.

To test, close all applications to rule out CPU/Memory load as the cause and see if the lag still occurs by moving your mouse left and right in quick, single jerks on the desktop. If it still happens then maybe some malware has inserted a program between your mouse (and video/keyboard) driver and the processor to remotely monitor your actions. This can cause the delay.

I wouldn't trust any currently installed AV software since it may be compromised.

What will happen in the future with Internet business regarding computer viruses?

There will be more and more sophisticated attempts at breaching computer security as we move into the future. Therefore, all online and offline businesses need to take measures to protect themselves against computer viruses, worms, hackers, etc. This might include installation of virus protection software, a firewall, periodic vulnerability assessments, etc. Businesses should also have a disaster recovery plan in place, just in case safeguards fail in one way or another. I would highly recommend that you call a local computer consultant for professional advice in this area.

IE Problem

It's likely to be a virus infection. Make sure you have a good anti-virus program running. There are lots of malicious websites out there that will automatically put junk on your computer whether you want them or not. Would also be a good idea to regularly run Spybot Search & Destroy (a free program) to weed out all the spyware that websites also like to deposit.

How do you erase everything but windows vista and its programs you have a virus and you have nothing onm the computer of importance you just want it new?

First of all, if Vista has system files that are corrupted or otherwise altered to a state that is not what is supposed to be there (by whatever), the only really good and reliable way to fix it is format the drive and use a tool (will be something that runs from a CD) that will clean the drive by writing to every sector on it to overwrite any data on the drive. The tool has to be able to ignore and overwrite even marked areas.

BUT, since you had to ask this question, I will assume you are not technically savvy enough to find or use those tools, and tell you that the best way to do it for you is get a legitimate copy of Windows Vista (from your computer manufacturer specifically for your computer make and model), which will be on a DVD(s), and boot (restart) from it. Follow the directions and answer the questions. It may ask you at some point if you want to format and restore your operating system back to original factory install. You want to answer yes. NOTE: THIS WILL ERASE YOUR HARD DRIVE COMPLETELY, AND MAKE YOUR COMPUTER LIKE IT WAS WHEN YOU FIRST BOUGHT IT!!! No personal data will remain. However, there may also be an option that will allow you to repair. As a rule, this option has been unreliable. So just format and restore to factory original. That works reliably.

In the event that your computer manufacturer cannot sell you a legitamate copy of Windows for whatever reason, go to some place like Best Buy and buy one. Make certain it's not an upgrade. That will not work for you. You have to have a copy of XP on your computer for that to work. Get a full install version of Vista. Then boot (restart)your computer from the DVD and follow the directions. NOTE: Protect your new DVD(s) from scratches religiously. You may have to use them to restore your computer again some day.

Then, once you have your system restored, go to http://www.avira.com/en/products/avira_desktop_products.HTML , and get either the premium or security suite, your choice. (NOTE: I am not associated with any company producing any software product) This is what I use, and have used to fix other people's computers. I am one of many local neighborhood geeks. Be sure to uninstall any antivirus software that comes with your computer (usually Norton or Mcafee, both of which I have seen fail, a lot).

Make certain that you maintain your subscription to Avira so that you get all the updates to continue protecting Windows. Maintain all Windows updates as well from Microsoft.com. Take the time to get to know how to use Avira. And do not get the free version. It is not comprehensive enough by itself, and must be used with other software protection to have complete enough protection. So, you being a non-geek, stick to the complete package. The free version does work very well, but it only does a few things.

When you begin this project, make sure you have all day to do it. Windows takes quite awhile to install, so have some other project that is secondary that you can fiddle around on while the computer is doing it's thing. Then come back to it when it requires your attention.

I sincerely hope this help. Have a great day.

You are unable to download any antyvirus software?

There are malware variants that do prevent you from downloading or installing antivirus software. Sometimes you need to find the registry key for the program that is blocking you, and delete it. Then you can reboot Windows into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key as Windows is starting. This is often effective.

What is the name of latest virus and how its work?

Actually. There are many viruses being made at this moment. They can be created to do anything to harm or damage your computer. If you receive an e-mail from a friend with the title, 'No Subject' Do not open it, unless you are certain of the contents. That is indeed a virus. It is a bug that goes inside your computer. My mother opened it and had to reboot our computer. It's been going around recently.

Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu error?

This message is caused when Windows encounters a corrupt hibernation file. You can delete the error or try to reboot using that hibernation file. Deleting the file means that anything you had loaded in memory will be gone when you boot into Windows.

Occasionally, Windows seems to "hang" or "lock" when this screen appears. Try a PS2 Keyboard, a PS2 adapter for your Keyboard, or unplugging the keyboard and then plugging it back in.
