Crayola crayons have been around for over one hundred years and first came to market in the year 1903. They were superior because of their bright colors, their cost and their coverage on paper.

Crayola did not invent the crayon. Records show that Europe was the birthplace of the "modern" crayon. The first crayons were made from a mixture of charcoal and oil. Later, powdered pigments of various hues replaced the charcoal. It was discovered that substituting wax for the oil in the mixture made the sticks sturdier and easier to handle.

Crayola Crayons were invented by Binney & Smith in 1902 and first offered for sale in 1903. Alice (Stead) Binney, a school teacher and wife of co-founder Edwin Binney, suggested the company manufacture an inexpensive alternative to imported crayons of that era. The trade name Crayola was coined by Mrs. Edwin Binney who joined the French word "craie," meaning stick of chalk and "ola" from the word "oleaginous," meaning oily. Crayola Crayons are made primarily from paraffin wax and color pigment.

Technically, Crayola produced a whole line of boxes in their origins. They had the familiar box with 8 colors but they also had a box that had 28 colors. Here are the original colors from all of their catalog offerings in 1903/1904:

Black, Blue, Brown (which was also called Van Dyke Brown), Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Celestial Blue, Charcoal Gray, Cobalt Blue (also call Light Blue), Copper, English Vermillion (essentially a shade of red), Flesh Tint (later shortened to Flesh), Gold, Golden Ochre (also called Gold Ochre), Green (also called Chrome Green), Dark Green (Also known as Chrome Dark Green), Light Green (also known as Chrome Light Green), Medium Green (also known as Chrome Medium Green), Indian Red, Lemon Yellow (also known as Light Yellow and Chrome Yellow, Light), Madder Lake, Olive Green, Orange, Permanent Geranium Lake, Permanent Magenta (also known as just Magenta), Pink (also known as Rose Pink), Prussian Blue (also known as Dark Blue), Purple (also known as Violet), Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Red, Silver, Ultramarine Blue, Venetian Red, "Venetian Red, Dark", "Venetian Red, Light", White, Yellow, "Yellow, Medium" (also known as Chrome Yellow, Medium).

There you have it. The 38 original color offerings across their entire initial catalog.

To remove crayon marks from painted walls or wood, start by gently rubbing the area with a soft cloth soaked in warm soapy water. If that doesn't work, you can use a mixture of baking soda and water to create a paste; apply it to the mark and rub gently with a soft cloth. For tougher stains, try using a small amount of rubbing alcohol or white vinegar on a cotton ball, but test it on a hidden area first to ensure it doesn't damage the finish. Always wipe the area clean with a damp cloth afterward to remove any residue.

First treat the crayon stain with WD40 let sit for a few minutes then treat again. Then treat with liquid dishwashing detergent and work it in gently. wash in as hot a water as you feel safe with

use a laundry detergent and color safe bleach

wash at least 12 min on high

rinse with warm water.

This suggestion is meant more for washable fabric obviously but if you are careful I think that you can make it work for you. the WD40 is the trick to break it down and the dish detergent is a grease fighter. I wish you well.

I had to do this process to an entire load of laundry worth over $200. It worked.

You can remove grease pencils with a paper towel or your finger.
