I believe that they were first grown in India, then spread into Greece and Italy and also China about the time of the roman Empire or earlier. I am interested in the history of plants too, and sometimes I found that its difficult to say exactly when or who discovered something.
I remember reading something about Pilmy the Elder who was a botanist in the Roman Empire, Its about the cures and used available to people to use, so the cucumber was in cultivation about that time, I'd check with wikipedia for more info about him and his works.
