Dachshunds

Bred to hunt badgers, Dachshunds have distinctive long bodies and dwarf legs which helps them to reach the badger burrows through tunnels easier. Dachshunds come in two sizes, the standard and the miniature. These dogs also have three different coat types, smooth, longhaired and wirehaired.

Can dachshunds use stairs i am thinking about buying a dachshund but do they have to use ramps i have 7 stairs and then a landing then 7 more stairs so can dachshunds use stairs?

My friend has a dachshund and it can use her stairs quite easily, I have never heard of a dachshund having that problem.

I have a Dachshund Beagle Mix, she does great on stairs anyone's Dachshund i know can do stairs but i do know of one person but there dachshund got a back injury yours should be fine unless it gets a back injury

.................................

Due to their long backs they run a risk of injuring discs. They should use a ramp instead of stairs and never jump up on furniture or jump down from furniture. If a disc becomes ruptured the dachshund could become paralyzed. Special concern should be given due to this breed specific risk.

Does dachshund have any genetic disorters?

Yes, Dachshund's are subject to some genetic diseases, including slipped disc syndrome. Some owners are apt to pamper their Dachshunds in the hopes of preventing slipped discs. However, rather than being a condition of long-backed, low-slung dogs, the syndrome is probably genetic and pampering has no effect on its expression.

Eye abnormalities, urinary tract stones, and mammary gland cancers can be problems in the breed, and the dapple coat pattern (known as "Merle") is connected with eye and hearing difficulties. Some cancers, such as mast cell tumors are common in the breed, as are heart problems, undescended testes.

Your best bet for a healthy dog, is to buy from a reputable breeder who is breeding dogs that have been genetically tested, and has the paper work to prove it.

Is the Miniature Dachshund a good pet for families?

Yes! I have 2 of them myself, and they are very sweet and careful with children! If you have babies or young infants or toddlers, i suggest a long haired dachshund! Those are the most loving and caring kinds! Just make sure that the children are responsible enough, and are careful, because dachshunds are prone to back injuries.

What is a Chiweenie?

A Chi weenie is a mixed breed between a chihuahua and a dachshund. These dogs only get about 5-10 pounds and 8 inches tall, but crossed with a standard dachshund and they can be bigger. A Chiweenie is no better, or worse, with children than a dachshund or chihuahua. Some claim that it is a dachshund with less of a predisposition to back problems, but they fail to admit it can also be a chihuahua more predisposed to back problems. The genetic history is just as important with hybrids as any other dog that someone chooses to breed.

It is always wise to do your research before buying any animal, so you can choose what is right for you, and what is right for the animal. Always research what a motive should be behind a breeding, as the breeder should behave as though they are responsible for each dog they breed for the rest of their lives, and the rest of all the progeny's lives. Very few of these "cross breeder" are responsible, so proceed with caution.
