Dachshunds

Bred to hunt badgers, Dachshunds have distinctive long bodies and dwarf legs which helps them to reach the badger burrows through tunnels easier. Dachshunds come in two sizes, the standard and the miniature. These dogs also have three different coat types, smooth, longhaired and wirehaired.

What is better for a family who has never owned a dog yorkie or a daschund?

Even better than those two breeds are Havanese. Havanese are non-shedding, medium/small,cute/fluffy, not very delicate like Maltese or yorkie, more built like a shih-tzy...but WAAAAYYYYYYYY cuter.....

Here is a like or two if you are interested. On the websites, it will tell you about the havanese and a lot more!

What causes dachshund's to have spinal problems?

One spinal problem Dachshunds are especially prone to is called disc disease. Disc disease is most likely to occur if you let your Dachshund jump on and off of the furniture all the time. This happens because the discs in their spinal column degenerate, and causes them pain.

Is it dangerous for a 13 year old daschund to go under anthesia?

Like humans at any age there is always a risk factor and the elderly and older pets are at higher risk, but I've owned a lot of small dogs and my Cookie (long-haired daschund) was 14 and had surgery done on her back and she was just fine. The vets know exactly what proportions of anesthetic to give your pet and the risk is low. If your pet really needs the surgery then please take the risk. If it's something simple then don't risk it.

What is calcium build-up on the spine and how can it be cured?

Calcium buildup is called "Arthritis" and cannot be cured... The worst arthritis involving the spine is when there is enough buildup to cause "impingement" of the spinal cord, otherwise known as "stenosis"... Usually noted in older individuals, it can be as a result of trauma [fall, herniated disc, scoliosis, etc]. The "stenosis" occurs in about 80% of older folks and rarely goes on to cause medical problems such as paraplegia (weakness & loss of sensation) [lower extremities affected] or all extremities, called quadriplegia... resulting in partial to complete paralysis/loss of sensation... Understand this... Arthritis is a normal action by the body to buildup or strengthen a bony joint to prevent wear & tear of that joint... The body is unable to manufacture new cartilage, so what ends up happening is regular bone builds up, narrowing the joint space [in general terms], and spinal cord compression when in the spine.. If there IS impingement of the spinal cord as diagnosed by MRI, additional tests are required: CT milligram to get a better "feel" for how much spinal cord impingement [compression] of the cord, and Electromylography [EMG's and Nerve conduction studies] of the extremities to see if there is actual cord damage... If so, surgery is absolutely necessary to "free up" the bony entrapment of the nerves affected to prevent further nerve damage... Remember... IF there is evidence of increasing weakness,[neck: dropping things, loss of sensitivity in your hands, muscle waisting of the arm(s) & hands... lower spine: increasing weakness of the legs, loss of feeling, muscle waisting on buttocks/legs/feet, etc] then you need to see a neurosurgeon or orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in spinal surgery ASAP... Good answer above, the calcium deposits that occur on the spine are a natural part of the aging process, they are also called bone-spurs. Most people in their 40's and 50's will have some bone-spurs if an X-Ray is taken, most are symptom free, but as noted above can cause nerve root compression or spinal cord compression. Much back pain in those with arthritis is due to degenerative arthritis of the articular facets (small joints on either side of the spine that allow vertebrae to move against the vertebrae above and below). No cure for bone-spurs, but must be treated surgically if causing compression or impingement on surrounding tissues.

How old does a female dachshund have to be to be spayed?

For this question, many people have a different opinion. Most veterinarians will say that Dog's should be spayed before their first season, but once they have reached physical maturity (about 6 months old). I had my female Longhaired Miniature Dachshund spayed at 8 months old, but consult your vet. Do not take her to be spayed before she is 6 months old as this can cause urinary incontinence. Any age after this is fine.

If there are any in your area, veterinarian's offices are the BEST place to ask. Make a few phone calls and see if any of them have breeders as clients.

Your five year old still has all of his baby teeth He has started complaining of his cheeks being in pain to the touch Could this be related to a sudden loss of teeth?

More than likely, it is teething pain associated with erupting 6 year molars. Those teeth will appear behind his last baby molars, and he does not have to lose any baby teeth before they come in. This pain can come and go for several weeks before the teeth finally come into the mouth.

Sometimes children's Tylenol or Advil can ease the teething pain.

Typically, the first teeth to get loose and come out will be the central incisors located in the middle of the lower jaw. There can be some pain associated with this growth process.

If in doubt, just have your family dentist take quick peek in the mouth. This can be diagnosed in about two seconds.
