No No they shouldn't be left out. Small dogs can come under the heading of "lap dogs" meaning they are small enough to sit on one's lap and are meant to be close companions in the household. I once owned a long-haired Dachie who was always close to me and I would no more think of having left her outside (even in a kennel) than I would put a small child outside for the night. Preditors can also attack small dogs and do. Even in cities there are coyotes and once where I live in B.C. in a large town I saw a 400 lb. bear amble up my driveway (over-fed itself and no real risk) but my eyes bulged out of my head and I was glad I kept my small dogs inside. If you don't like your small dog sleeping with you then train them to go to their cushion in the corner of the bedroom (they love to be close to their owner.) My husband and I don't mind our small dogs in bed with us and if we want some privacy they are told to go to their cushion in the front room. If you find this breed a dog too much for you then either give or sell your dog to someone who will give them the love and attention they should. Too many people never check out the breeds that would best suit their home before purchasing a dog. Don't take the chance, something might come into your yard and kill it, that's what happend to my bunny. :(

Dachshunds were bred to hunt small animals such as rabbits, who run and hide in their holes to get away from the dachshund. The extra skin makes it easier for the dachshund to retreat from the hole after catching their prey.

Yes! Long-haired Dachshunds shedding is much more noticeable, but it doesn't occur all the time. Short-haired Dachshunds shed year-round, but you can't really tell. I'm not sure about wire-haired ones, though.

They are so scared because they are small. Everything to them is huge and they are used to being scared of being stepped on. It is normal. It just takes some training and practice to make sure your dog doesn't get anxious. They are prone to tremble with fear. My dachshund loves to be held up when we go somewhere with a lot of people. But I also did a lot of leash training with her to get her used to being on the ground and not so scared. When your dog is trusting of you, he/she will follow either directly behind you or next to your feet when you are walking because they can trust you to fend off anything scary for them. When dieting you should weigh yourself in the morning. However throughout the day because of fluctuations in body water content,your weight can decrease up to as much as five lbs! But remember this is water loss, not fat.

They can be. If you get your dachshund at a young age and be careful with not mistreating it, they will be more calm when they're grown up. My friend has a dachshund that was mistreated and its cranky all the time and will bite you. Dachshunds will get more excersize if they have another dog to play with, prefferably another dachshund.

The most common reason for licking feet is they have a developed habit of it. My two dogs (one is a mini schnauzer and the other is a schnauzer terrier mix) lick their feet and their bottoms. My terrier mix licks her feet because she has arthritis (she is nine years old), and my mini schnauzer licks his feet when he's bored (he's only two years old).

Piebald is not a cross breed. Two dachshunds bred together need to have the piebald gene in their background. Piebald is recessive and will not show up but you could see a relative that was a piebald in the pedigree. Two piebalds bred together will produce all piebald puppies.

Many breeds of dogs can do this especially the smaller dogs. Some do it because it's soothing to them while others do it because they are nervous. Dachshunds are a breed that certainly need a lot of love and attention and considered 'lap dogs.' I use to own a female long haired Dachshund and she was most affectionate. She'd demand to have her little blanket warmed up in the clothes dryer for bedtime during winter months and would hit my leg with her nose. You guessed it ... I got up and immediately did it. She'd lay in it with a little sigh. Dachshunds do not like changes to routine either. If you are redecorating and moving furniture this can put them off or you are working and leaving the dog home. As you know Dachshunds are big dogs in a little body and their demands are many. if it continues please see your vet to be sure there are no other problems causing this.

Seeming as though chihuahuas are so small, it is not advised. However, depending on the conditions you live in, its not impossible.

We have a miniature dachshund and sometimes she shivers when she is cold. She loves to burrow under blankets and be kept really warm. She also likes to lay in front of a heat vent in the winter and finds sun to lay in during spring/summer.

These animals tend to like warmer temperatures than humans and the smaller they are the more this is so. Blankets and hugs work wonders. A puppy also may not have grown into it's dachshund-super-courage yet and my shiver when scared as dogs of other breeds tend to do.

No, breeding from a Dachshund does not affect it's lifespan - unless it dies during giving birth etc. It can be damaging to the dog's health, however, if it has more than two or three litters in it's lifetime, or becomes pregnant before the age of two.

1st of all, dogs(including dachshunds,) do not lay eggs.

2nd of all, a whole litter of dashchund puppies would probably be like 6-8.

Well a healthy beagle is about 30lbs at adulthood and a dachshund as an adult usually weighs anywhere from 6-10lbs. So I would guess about 12-20 lbs.
