Daffodils

I sell bouquets of daffodils at the local farmer's market, and my customers have been telling me that my own experience is spot on. A cut daffodil should live a good week in a vase. A lot depends on its age when the flower was cut, but I've never done any of the complicated things people do to make bouquets last longer. Just give them fresh water, and be grateful for this sunny herald of spring.

A producer or autotroph (self + feeding) is an organism that produces complex products from simple substances in its environment. Simply put, they make their own food. Autotrophs include plants, algae and many bacteria. Since a daffodil is a plant, and it uses light energy to make food to sustain itself, then the answer is YES, a daffodil is an autotroph.

I don't know where you are, but the daffodils bloomed early in January down in NE Georgia as well. It's been a warm winter, so the daffodils got an early start because of the rise in soil temperature told them it was time. Normally we see the wild type daffodil flowers on Valentine's Day, with the culivars following no later than the first of March. Back in 1996 it stayed cold all the way through March, and our first daffodils that year bloomed on April 26th.

A shrub is a perennial, multibranched, woody plant which is shorter than a tree at under 20 feet tall.

A herbaceous perennial is a plant of very short stature (generally under 2 feet), which grows during 2 seasons, dies back and sleeps for two seasons, to return the next year.

A daffodil fits the description of a herbaceous perennial rather than a shrub.

According to legend, St. David (the patron saint of Wales) was getting ready for a battle that took place in a leek field. He told his Britons to wear a leek in their caps to reduce casualties from "friendly fire", since their enemy, the Saxons, looked like their brothers. This produced a defining victory for the Britons. Today, on March 1st, Welsh people wear the leeks in remembrance. Micro means "little", and a microbe is usually too small to be seen by the human eye without the aide of a microscope. These include bacteria, fungi, protists and possibly viruses, most of which are single-celled organisms. What makes daffodils so popular is that they are visible at the end of a long winter in a multitude of shapes and colors. Daffodils are NOT micro-organisms.

Duncan Norvelle (born 1958 in Hoton, Leicestershire, England) is most famous for his phrases starting with "Chase Me!". "Chase Me! I'm a daffodil" is one of his lines. In April 2012 he suffered a stroke leaving him paralysed on his left side. He has not been performing since the stroke.

The Daffodil Festival is held among 650,000 blooming daffodils in Hubbard Park, Meriden, CT. every April. An estimated 70,000 people enjoy food, crafts, music, fireworks, a parade and carnival. The 2-day festival began in 1978. Parking and admission is free. Bring some money for the food, crafts and carnival.

Soil that retains water and gives daffodils "wet feet" will cause bulb rot and the plants/bulbs will die. Sandy soil is well drained and slightly acidic and that is a favorite of daffodils. Sandy soil will also make for slightly taller daffodils, which are preferred if you like cut flowers.

It certainly can! The daffodil is especially adapted to a water environment and mixes well with mum daisies, roses and other spring flowers. Commercial bouquets don't often include them be cause their life is comparatively short, but in a home bouquet, it is especially charming.

Leave the daffodils in the ground. You can plant annuals above them, and it won't hurt a thing. However, it is always a good thing to put some mulch down before winter starts, so in the spring things are ready for the daffodils and earthworms to get a good start in the spring.

There are many varieties of daffodils and that means there are many different heights. Generally the daffodil is about 12-18inches tall. However, the Hoop Petticoat and Petite Daffodils grow only to 6 inches, and there are miniature varieties of only 2-inches. There are others that can reach 24 inches. It's said that the sandier the soil, the taller the plant. Also plants tend to be taller when a clump hasn't been separated in a great many years.

These flowers remain underground in the form of bulbs in the winter and reproduce in the spring.
