The 1920's also known as "the roaring twenties" were a time of progression and change. The decade saw a massive economic boom, widespread technological advance and increased personal freedom. This personal freedom caused many changes; several people were influenced by these changes especially families. Family life varied as many customs became archaic and responsibility became a crucial issue for women in the United States in the 1920's.

Housewives in families were impacted a great deal; they had the job of taking care of the whole family. In the past, housewives had the occupation of producing food and clothing but in the 1920's they became the chief shopper, making sure the family spent enough money. They considered new household management by using the new products in the market and worked long hours cleaning, cooking, etc. but many of these tasks were made lighter and simpler with the use of technology. Housewives were also the chauffeur; they went shopping and transported children.

The 1920's called for a time of organization. Many young children who worked in factories and other places tended to have a negative atmosphere but in 1922, child labor laws were initiated after the Bailey v. Drexel Furniture Company incident. These labor laws and mandatory admittance laws kept children away from home for hours. The inherited values were beginning to be lost as children attended schools. Before the 1920's, parents and adults played an influential role in socializing children. Children revolved around adults more as they were taught what to do. All this changed when school peer groups influenced kids to interact with other of the same age.

Finally, family time was a major concern; a clear pattern was seen between 1920 and 1930 that showed a decrease in family size. This was due to an increase in Birth Control usage. Only 20 percent of families had five or more kids. The low Birth Rate meant longer life expectancy. This in turn meant that there was more time to do non-family activities by allotting a small portion of time to raise children.

There were many other changes that took place within families during the 1920; altered habits and customs were inevitable. These changes disseminate throughout America and also reflect upon today's family life style.

You may find some of them on eBay, though not as often as you used to. If you do find one, it's likely to need a lot of repairs, and will weigh so much that it's either "local pick-up only" or will cost over $100 to ship by freight.

Most of these 1950s-1970s electro-mechanical registers were junked, because they're not beautiful to look at (like the really old brass and nickel registers), and if you just put them into storage (as most shopkeepers did when they bought electronic registers), they'll seize up, and most of the technicians who used to maintain and repair them have long-since retired.

Mechanical cash registers are full of mechanical parts, which make them weigh over 100 lbs. each. And today's electronic machines cost far less than the mechanical ones did, and can do far more than the electro-mechanical machines ever could.

In the first half of the 70s I lived next door to the man who murdered his young wife and hid her body in the chimney of a house down the road a bit. As a next door neighborI was actually (and briefly) questioned in the murder investigation as a matter of routine and of course ruled out immediately. It was all strange. The couple was strange, the method of murder nor the weapon were never discovered. In fact, the body was not discovered for a long time, maybe a year. The (very nice) house where the body was hidden in the chimney was undergoing a remodel when the body was stashed there. Scaffolding was used by the murderer to climb up, two stories and a steep roof, and then the chimney, with the body, and drop or stuff her down the chimney. If you saw the house you'd think it was impossible. The young woman was small, but so was the husband who killed her. After searching for many years I've never found any official account of the murder, but I understood that the religion of the murderer allowed that he not ever confess any sin except but to Jehova. He did confess to his own father after a couple of years, and was turned over to the police from there.

There was a mysterious bug infestation in the remodeled house that could not be resolved after several attempts, the source of the bugs not being found until someone finally knocked a brick block from the bottom of the chimney inside the houses basement. They reached in and pulled out some human hair. That was the beginning of the solution to the murder case.

I have to add that even the next occupant of the murderers house (rental cottage, next to mine) seemed to have strange and unexplainable behavior at times. I witnessed him charging across my front yard with a loaded shotgun, screaming and chasing something no one could see but him. It was as though he'd heard voices and was misguided by them. I left the state in 1976.
