Light pastel colours work best in small spaces without natural light. In a personal space, use a colour that makes you feel comfortable. In an office try something on the warm side of neutral, perhaps a soft buttery yellow, or barely there salmon-pink. An Analogous Color Scheme would use colors right next to blue on the color wheel for a look that blends. You will get a subtle effect by using colors that are just a few shades from the base color.

Cherry wood cabinets give you a lot of room for choices. Because cherry wood has such depth and presence it can stand up to a dark or intense colour should you choose one. Hunter green, royal blue, wine red, or even mustard yellow would all look good with cherry.
If colours that intense are not to your taste, then a medium or pastel shade of one of them would be fine. I like greens with cherry, but find the colour hard to live with so I personally would use a grey-blue (for a light colour) or the royal for drama.
If the cabinets are in a kitchen, and the room is quite open and airy, you could choose any of the colours depending on your taste.
