What wall colors would go best with a charcoal gray couch?

Depending on your "style" you have several options.

If you want a sophisticated look that has some punch, try a grey that is in the same family as the grey of your carpet, with a light "wash" of either silver or pearlised purple over it.

If you want a warm cozy look that is easy to live with, use the same colour as above and do not put a colour wash over it.

If you are very fond of purple, you could paint the wall a colour in the same family as your couches. The darker the paint, the more coats it will take to get the colour right and the more coats it will take to return it to a neutral when you move out. A lighter tone might be easier to live with.

Just for the record... do not try to get a match for either the couches or the carpet as paint on a wall rarely ever exactly matches.

How do you sponge paint?

Sponge painting is done in one of two manners. Addition or subtraction.

Addition - apply a solid base coat of your choice. Foe latex or acrylic - Mix your second colour - 1 part faux finishing compound, 1/2 part water, 2 parts paint, pour into a clean paint tray, dip your sea sponge into the paint mixture and apply randomly to the wall. Keep a wet edge and work carefully into corners and small areas. You may want to use a multi-colour application for this, use several related colours our for a mono-chromatic scheme use several shades of the same colour.

Subtraction - apply your base coat and allow to dry. Mix your second colour in the same manner as above. Pour the mixture into a clean paint tray and apply with a roller. use a dampened sea sponge to remove colour from the wall. Keep your sponges (you will need several) clean and just barely damp for best results.

The Addition style can be very dynamic and dramatic, the subtraction style can be very subtle and sophisticated.

How do you repair a hole in a mirror?

this is for a 99 contour se, don't know if they are all the same

if it is the mirrored glass that is cracked:pop the glass off. that's right, it just pops off like Lego's. its a piece of glass on a pice of hard plastic, and the whole assebly will just pop out. then get a new glass assy from a dealer or junkyard. (they are like 5 bucks at a junkyard, about 15 at dealer)you can even trade the glass from driver to passenger side if you need one more than the other until you get it fixed. another temp fix is to get that mirror replacement stuff at an auto zone or napa or discount auto, but you will learn that the cut it yourself temporary mirror stuff is definitely just temporary.

if it is the mirror casing that's broke:read through the other contour faq's. they answer it a few times

What problems occur during painting?

It depends on what you are painting. In general, if it is possible to have a problem, you will! Most problems occur, I believe because people fail to read the instructions, do the prep work, which is the hardest, most time consuming and boring part of the job, and use the wrong paint for the project. Like anything you do, having the right tools for the job, and taking the time needed to get everything ready to be painted is the best insurance against problems. If you do not have experience painting, talk to a specialist in the paint department of a good hardware store. Sometimes the big warehouse stores don't have employees that can give you good advice. There are certain ways you need to cut out the room, certain techniques for rolling on the paint, different types of roller pads for different surfaces. You use a semi-gloss to paint wood trim but wouldn't want that on the wall. Conversely, you usually paint living and bedrooms with a flat latex but would not use flat paint on the trim.

Finally, don't start any painting project until you have everything you need in place, all the prep is done, and that you are sure to have plenty of time to finish what you start.

What color would you mix with white to get sandstone?

The problem answering this question is that "sandstone" can be several different colors ranging from shades of pink to green to brown. Ithink of sandstone as a taupe, which is a mixture of brown and grey. When you add pure white to a color to make it lighter, it can take on a pastel look. I suggest you use a light cream instead of white and add very small amounts of brown and grey to arrive at the shade you want. And I mean VERY SMALL. You can always add more. Because cream has a little yellow and brown in it, start by adding the grey. Make sure it is NOT a blueish grey. Then add the brown little at a time til you arrive at a pale taupe.

Are plantation shutters really practical?

Plantation shutters used on the inside of the windows are practical to the extent that they can shut out light, or let it in a little or a lot, like blinds would do. But you can't expose the entire window without opening them out and back against the wall on either side of the window. Or by using bi-fold styles that fold but stick out forward. In both cases, when the shutter is opened, it takes up space you may not have. Some people use shutters on the bottom half of the window and not the top so they let the light in but give you privacy at eye level. You also have to have double hung sash style windows. They are completely wrong with the crank out style of window. As beautiful as they are, they are not really practical. I would go with 2" wood blinds. They come in a lot of wood tones, and white is always

right. They look rich, not wimpy like mini blinds, but can go on any style of window.

How do you turn my brass hinges silver color?

You can buy a metallic paint. But painting brass hinges is almost a crime! Not only that, but they are never going to look quite right. I don't care what they do on HGTV. It will look like you painted it. That's not a good look. You can take them to a place that does chrome work, silver plating, etc.

and have them professionally coated. The crime in that is the cost. Unless these are really special or antique hinges, if you want the look of silver, brushed nickel or a look like that, you'll be better off buying new hinges.

Why do they spray texture on drywall walls instead of leaving them smooth?
