Yes. Dry socket results from the premature loss of the blood clot in the extraction site (socket). The clot can be lost due to many factors, including smoking, sipping through a straw, use of blood thinners such as aspirin or aspirin-type pain relievers, or sometimes menstration.

Dry socket is not an uncommon complication, and it is usually easily treated by the doctor that performed the extraction. Treatment of this complication is included in the fee you paid for the extraction.

You can eat as soon as the bleeding stops, but be very careful not to create any suction of any kind and try to keep all liquids off the area for 24 hours. In that 24 hours, you are not supposed to do anything that requires sucking like drinking through a straw or smoking. If you must smoke, tear off the filter and lightly puff. Trust me when I say you want to avoid, AT ALL COSTS, the excrutiating pain of Dry Socket! Dry Socket can make the pain last for days and even a couple weeks. I cheated my first time and ate soup with the gauze still clenched in my teeth. Just be sure not to swallow the gauze. ;-(

Usually it’s due to a combination of tooth decay, gum disease, fear, finances and neglect. Over time, the infections and pain become so severe that some people decide to have their teeth removed and replaced.

My father developed an infection around a wisdom tooth that caused him so much pain that he went to the dentist and insisted on having all his teeth removed and replaced with dentures, so that he would never experience that much pain again. That’s another reason.

Wisdom teeth (permanent 3rd molars) most often make their appearance between the ages of 16 and 20. However, they can grow in much earlier, much later, or not at all.

For many people, the jaws are too small to accommodate the 3rd molars, and they either become impacted (stuck in the bone) or they become infected and decayed. This why wisdom teeth are often removed.

A wisdom tooth, in humans, is any of the usual four third molars. Yes, a person can have additional teeth beyond the typical 32. For the most part, they are known as 'anomalies' which are variations from 'normal' with no substantial consequence.

I once personally witnessed 9 'wisdom teeth' being extracted at once. Most of them were smaller than a pencil eraser, but they were clearly teeth with roots, crowns and typical tooth anatomy.

THE WISDOM TOOTH that is really hurting is impacted ( infected and pushing on your gums.) Look in the phonebook in the colored pages and look for Medical listings under Town or State aid that may give you medical care based on your income level. If you make too much money to qualify, you'll have to save some money, because those wisdom teeth need to come out! Call some dentists and ask if you can pay over time. Many dentists will work with you, especially in an emergency. They may want a certain amount of $$ down, then let you pay it off over time. Work fast, because the tooth ( teeth ) will only get worse!
