Deserts

The two major deserts of Mexico are the Sonoran and the Chihuahuan.

The temperature would depend upon the season of the year. Parts of the Chihuahuan Desert sometimes exceed 110 degrees F. during the summer. In the winter it is not unusual to have temperatures of 60 or 70 degrees during the day. A few winter nights may see the temperature drop below freezing, however.

Cacti grow in hot, dry, areas. In Texas, this is the southwestern part of the State (Big Bend National Park) and along the western border with New Mexico.

That would depend upon the climate of the particular desert. In most hot deserts, mammals usually do not hibernate but cold blooded animals, such as snakes and lizards do. Some cold blooded animals go through a summer estivation (summer hibernation) period during the really hot and dry parts of the year. In some cold deserts, mammals may hibernate during the coldest part of winter.

Light waves are always refracted to some degree by convection currents and vertical refractivity gradients in air. That's why astronomers want to see starlight that has passed through as little air as possible. It's also the reason that the legends of flying horses and magic carpets originated in the regions with the hottest deserts.

A desert receives less than 10 inches (250 mm) of rainfall per year on average. If it averages more that this, it is not a desert.

During the periods when there is no sunrise, you can walk outside with ease lit by stars and aurora. During the days before and after a full moon, you can read a book outside by moonlight and starlight.

Stay away from all animals in the desert, or any other biome. Observe them from a distance but make no effort to bother them in any manner. They are all a natural and important part of the biome and deserve to be left to their own lives without interference. Mulga is a plant specially adapted to desert conditions, and its seeds are eaten by the mulga parrot. The chisel-toothed kangaroo rat eats the salty leaves of the saltbush, which also contain the water they need. The spinifex hopping mouse eats the roots and seeds of desert grasses such as spinifex. The white plumed honey-eater eats the nectar of the Sturt's Desert Pea, enabling pollination to occur.

There are no true deserts in Japan.
